+519 Obviously the egg came first because dinosaurs and fish have been around a lot longer than chickens and they lay eggs, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My thoughts EXACTLY.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

There are not many comments on POTD today... I wonder why?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think the question applies to chicken eggs, not eggs of other species.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yes, but literalism and pedantry are much more entertaining than reasonable thought. (I'm completely serious in case that sounded like sarcasm.)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

How's this for reasonable thought: Animals were laying eggs long before chickens existed. One of these animals eventually evolved into the chicken. The first chicken hatched out of an egg that had been laid by a different animal. Therefore, the chicken egg came before the chicken.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But do you (or most people) consider a chicken egg an egg that hatched into a chicken or an egg that came out of a chicken?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That's a good question. I personally define it as the first, but I hadn't really thought of that distinction before.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

So whatever laid the egg that the first chicken hatched from was... a slightly less adapted chicken. I mean, at one point, the thing we call a chicken hatched from an egg. Since that egg became a chicken, I think it's fair to call it a chicken egg.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

FUN FACT! Chickens are related to the T-Rex. http://ctrlv.in/111161 http://ctrlv.in/111162 http://ctrlv.in/111163 http://ctrlv.in/111164

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Damn... I wish I had scrolled down before I posted this. But I went through a lot of effort scanning the first page of Google Images for "T Rex Chicken". So I'm not taking it down.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Isn't that a well-known fact now? I'm not much into biology or evolutionary patterns and I knew that.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That doesn't make it any less fun to know.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Even the chicken egg came first. Whatever the chicken evolved from had to have laid an egg that hatched the first chicken. You can't have something give livebirth to a creature that lays eggs.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The chicken came first. Yes, the chicken came from an egg, but that was the egg of whatever laid it. Just because a chicken came from it doesn't mean it's a chicken egg.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

How is an egg that a chicken hatches out of not a chicken egg?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Chickens evolved from dinosaurs, no joke.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

So did I.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

All birds evolved from dinosaurs or maybe some pterosaurs. The funny thing is that T.rex specifically evolved into the chicken.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I consider a chicken egg to be an egg laid by a chicken, not just an egg a chicken came out of. That makes more sense, in my opinion.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Ezactly. With the knowledge of evolution, the question is more about the definition of what a chicken egg is that about which existed first.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@B10ckH34d that would be the lamest Pokemon ever... T Rex is evolving! T Rex is now Chicken!

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I always go with the argument that in *one* chicken's life, it was an egg first, Making the egg come first for that particular chicken.. Stretching the rules a bit, but it works for me.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

This question only works for Darwinians and their ilk. By its very nature, the question excludes everyone who believes all creatures were created in a few days as fully-formed adult creatures. Do not be insensitive and intolerant, please.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You're joking, right? It's a joke, calm down.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

They're actually asking for your opinion, so I wouldn't call that intolerant.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@brunetterox - Did you really just give a serious reply to that comment?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm not the only one who took it seriously. You never know. Some people seriously think that way.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

"Darwinians" are right. There's nothing intolerant about being right.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I've always felt like that was a trick question.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Actually, all jokes aside, there's a protein found in a chicken egg that can only be created in a chicken's ovary. Therefore, the chicken came first. inb4 Killjoy.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But the gene for that protein originated in an egg

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't remember where I read it, but the article explained it much better than I can. It said something about how the protein formed in the middle of the evolution of the chicken.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

1/10. Not funny. Pretty much a fact. Terrible.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm to introverted to go to parties...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You mean you don't get invited to parties...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I just imagined amiriters at a party. Favvkes with her cats. Anthony with his throne. And AppAwesome in the corner. By himself. Being downvoted.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yea, so?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Pssh that's ridiculous. ... I'd only bring one cat y

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Chicken eggs! Not just any eggs. 0.5/10

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Nice try. Maybe next time.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

*Falls to knees, looks up at the sky, raises arms* NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! NOOOOOOO!!!! NOOO-HO-HO!!!!

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think both are a circle with no beginning. Or is that only phoenixes?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

From a Christian standpoint, just debating the chicken/egg thing here, I believe chicken came first because God made the chicken an adult like Adam and Eve. Just my beliefs.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Lol I just imagined a Chicken, Adam, and Eve in the garden of Eve. That could make for an awesome show on FOX! (Not really at all)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You mean the garden of Eden.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

yeah i feel stupid now

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No worries, we all make mistakes. smile

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Haha I was picturing the same thing as Jonesy tho while writing that. A chicken, Adam and Eve, just standing there looking around.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Great minds think alike. ;D

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Actually, if you believe in evolution then it's the chicken, because dinosaurs or whatever evolved into chickens, and if you believe that god made the animals, then it too would be the chicken

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Wait hes got a point. I mean look at Pokemon. Thats scientifically sound.
