+217 Swatting a child on the rear once or twice when he or she does something bad is not child abuse, amirite?

I'm guessing that the people voting this down also think that washing a child's mouth out with soap when he or she says a naughty word is child abuse, too.

Child abuse or not, "swapping" (or washing a child's mouth with soap - SERIOUSLY? Do anyone do that?), is degrading and not a way of creating a good and respectful relationship with a child. Why can't you just talk with the kid? Explain the shit to it.

Because children often times cannot comprehend the reason why what they're doing is wrong. You can explain those things to them when they're older. Society has changed a lot, and probably has become too safe. Think, parents used to belt their kids. I don't agree with that, but those children probably turned out fine. I was spanked a few times as a child, I had my mouth washed out with soap, and I have turned out perfectly fine and I love my parents very much. My relationship with them is a very good one.

No, it's not child abuse. But spanking should be used as a last resort.

It depends on the child. Some children can't take that and grow up with low self-esteem and a hatred for the parent the spanked thtem but they don't understand why they have those feelings. It is also considered a power-play and a way to unknowingly humiliate your child. In twenty-three countries spankings and /or raps on the hands when a child is bad is consider a punishable offense.
