+165 The Bible tends to contradict itself sometimes (no offense intended to people who believe in the Bible), amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

None taken. But what parts seem to contradict each other? I have read the bible several times and might be able to clarify some things.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Same here, I have done papers on these contradictions. Apollo, I will stand by your side in any apologetics that needs to be done...

I won't go through them one by one, because there are general answers to most of them. Different gospels recorded Jesus' story for different purposes, and so they included different details, and left out different details. The same story is in all of them, but because they were writing to different groups, they included different parts of the story. They all have similarities as well. Some contradictions about God are confusing, but true. He is merciful, and Just. He loves us, and punishes us. He is a God who gives us peace, and a God who Fights to protect his people. Some contradictions exist between Old and New Testament because Jesus' forgiveness fulfilled the Law (because we are forgiven, we are no longer bound by the law). If you want me to go through some specific ones, I can do that as well; just ask.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The reason detail is different is because its told by different people and some noticed some and some didn't just like when you hear a story from 3 or 4 different people they all tell the same thing but some put more or less things into it

by Anonymous 13 years ago

True. And because Matthew was writing to the Jews, Luke was writing to a friend, John (maybe the first gospel writer) wrote a condensed account with much less detail, and Mark wrote to the Gentiles. Their audience/purpose in writing the story was different, so they included different things.

doctrine does not contradict doctrine. Dogma goes against doctrine, and dogma goes against dogma. So truly it is not scripture that contradicts itself it is interpretations of scripture.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

to person above me, very good point, well said

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, there's the time where Jesus sends ten sick people to be healed somewhere, and as they travel, they're healed, and only one goes back to thank Jesus. Jesus praises him for coming back, even though the others were doing what Jesus told them to... It's not really a contradiction, but that's all I have.

Like love thy neighbor and not liking gays. What if your neighbor was gay? Then what?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Love the sinner; hate the sin. :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

that's stupid. You wouldn't really love them because you would hate who they were.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Not true! I have gay friends who I love dearly even though I don't approve of homosexuality. Just as I have friends who have lied, stolen, cheated, and committed a various amount of other sins... I still love them just not the sin.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If you have gay friends that you care about, why not just accept homosexuality? They are your friends.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Because I believe it's a sin and to know that they could be tortured for eternity kills me! Nothing is worse than knowing someone you love could be in pain and there is nothing you can do to stop it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

why would God let them be tortured if He loves everyone?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Because the penalty for sin is Death, or eternal separation for God. Because God loves us he gave us a way out of this punishment. Jesus was sent to pay that price for everyone. God does not banish people to Hell, but rather saves them from it. But he can only save you if you want to be saved.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

so why wouldn't gays go to heaven if they want to be saved?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I read this somewhere and feel that it accurately describes what you asked "Anyone who continues living in their sin deems their sin more important than God. When we turn from that sin and focus on Him and repent with a true heart we seek to enter into His eternal Kingdom." This is something I struggle with a lot. It's so easy to fall into sin.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

no offense, but this whole argument is kind of assuming everyone is christian, which is certainly not true (I'm Jewish) so what if someone wants to love another woman/man? How will that affect you going to heaven? It's their choice. Why do christians have to allow them?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Because if they want forgiveness, all they have to do is confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised him from the dead. It's a free gift, but if anyone refuses it they end up eternally separated from God (in Hell).

by Anonymous 13 years ago

so why are they going to hell? They could just do that!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

because some people choose to hold on to their sin instead of admitting that Jesus lived, died, and rose again, and was in fact the Son of God. Anyone, gay or not, can accept Jesus as Lord and savior at anytime, so long as they believe in Jesus as God.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't understand why it is wrong to be gay. Explain that to me.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

There are verses in the bible saying that homosexuality is wrong (in the old and new testaments)*, but the root of it is that God created man, and when he saw that man had no suitable partner, God created woman. Man and woman are made for each other, and going against that is going against the reason God created us the way he did. *(the verses are Leviticus 20:13, Deuteronomy 23:17, Romans 1:26-27, Hebrews 13:4, and a few others)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

did you know that we are all born with the potential to be bisexual? And that being gay is the result of the way certain hormones interact while you are in the fetus?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

if we are created in god's image, why would he create gays? I think God's bi. That would explain it. I also think god would be pissed at the way christians treat people who are different. If I was god, I would be totally sickened.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Although I disagree with first part of your post, I do believe it is horrible the way some Christians treat others! God calls us to love them and yet we still have Christians who choose to ridicule and shove the Bible down others throat. Some like to judge others without examining the speck in their own eyes first. And thanks Apollo for the words and the verses!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

@131105 (Anonymous): God doesn't create gays, being gay is a choice. Everyone is tempted by sin; in fact sin is often referred to as our human nature. But just because someone is tempted by murder doesn't mean they have to murder people. Read Romans 1:18-32 and you will see that homosexuality is a result of our depraved minds, and not God's creation.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

@131139 (Apollo): that is the most wrong thing I have heard in a while. Why would anyone choose to be gay when there are people like you in the world who are so terrible to gays? I am gay, and I can tell you it was not a choice. Did YOU ever make a choice to say that you were straight? No. You didn't. Sexuality is from the hormones that interact with your brain when you were a fetus. And I'm jewish, so the bible doesn't tell me what is right or wrong. You shouldn't tell people what they can and can't do, based on things that were written in a book that was edited and changed to make Jesus seem more than a man. In those days, homosexuality was condemned only because they couldn't have children and there was a very high infant mortality rate, not because it was condemned by god.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes, actually, I did make a choice to be straight. The bible is filled with material outlining what is right and wrong. The dead sea scrolls proved the portion of the bible which correlated to it to be almost 100% accurate. Who would edit the bible to make a God who tells us to be the servant of others and wash their feet? Homosexuality is condemned because God condemned it, first in Sodom, and then elsewhere. until then, people just accepted it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Love them even in they're gay. I believe every word in the Bible, and I have many gay friends, who I love and appreciate just as much as anyone else.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

we need more people like you in the world.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I read the link: it says in one contradiction that Jesus said that a and God are one, and that God is greater than him. The list of contradictions thinks that Jesus is contradicting himself, but he means that God and him are the same flesh but God is more powerful. This list is false. I looked up in my Bible the contradictions, and most of them are out of context. Please try to understand the scriptures instead of reading one website and then deciding that the Bible is false

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The Bible isn't contradictory, the christians (sometimes) are.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Completely true. But those people who call themselves Christians and contradict the Bible oplenly with no remorse, aren't actually true Christians and they should not represent Christians.
