+112 I understand that the classes outside your major are to give you a well rounded education, but it is a total waste of time and money. I want to be a doctor. How in the Hell is something like history/English Literature going to help me make a diagnosis? amirite?

So people don't think you're an idiot when you tell them you don't know who was chancellor of Germany during WWII.

I'm pretty sure everyone learns this in about 3rd grade social studies.

I'm still trying to figure out what Calculus, Modern European History, and Survey of Jazz have to do with veterinary medicine.

It's university, not job-training.

Have you ever thought of what would happen if you can't get a job in whatever you trained specifically for?

When you're trying to write your doctoral thesis without having taken a sophisticated English class, what happens then? And then after, when you're applying for jobs and want to talk in the most sophisticated manner possible? English and math are skills you will use every day for the rest of your life.

Well as a British student, I think it's much better that you get to study subjects outside of your major, instead of being tied down so early, like you are here. Maybe that's just because I won't have the choice, but it seems like a much more flexible system in the States.

I like that we only study the subject we choose

I can understand doing that in high school, but it's a little ridiculous that they make you pay for classes you don't really need.

What's wrong with taking classes that make you well-rounded? If you don't know anything about humanities how the hell are you supposed to have an intelligent conversation with someone outside of the medical field? It's basically to make you a competent adult. Have you talked to someone who isn't? It gets old, fast.

Um...there are none of these classes in med school actually. You might take some of these getting your undergrad but not in the last few years of your education.

I think being a well-rounded and well-informed member of society is a good thing, but that's just me.
