+339 It's horrible when people judge an overweight person in a wheelchair and assume they're in the wheelchair because they're fat, when in fact they're more likely to be overweight because they can't excercise or because they're on medication for the same condition that put them in the wheelchair, etc. amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It isn't fair of you to assume that either. We don't know these people, therefore it isn't fair to judge them and it isn't fair to justify their actions.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not saying you should assume anything - I just hate it when ignorant people automatically decide that if a person is both overweight and in a wheelchair, it must be their own fault for getting fat when that is most likely not the case (or at least, I have never met anyone wheelchair bound that was so purely because of weight related issues). And it's not my place to "justify" the action of someone using a wheelchair - how could it be?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I totally agree with what you're saying; both scenarios irk me.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I have meet somebody that had to be in a wheel car because they are overweight

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Or they could just eat lard non stop.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wait... if they're in the wheelchair, because they're overweight, then they are fat d Addressing the lack of logic on your second line

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It seems logical. I think you are getting messed up by the wording. The OP is saying that its horrible when people judge overweight people in wheelchairs and that its also horrible when they assume they're in the wheelchair because of weight. The OP isn't saying to assume(hypothetically) that they are in the wheelchair because they are overweight.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You're saying they could be in a wheel chair, because they broke their leg(s) or something?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That is what the OP is saying.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Ah, okay

by Anonymous 12 years ago

ive never come across this scenario...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

as in people talking about fat people in wheelchairs, or even fat people in wheelchairs. they are generally skinny.. or fit in their upper body.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Most people I see that have been in wheel chairs their whole lives (children) are really skinny, do to lack of exercise.

No one ever stops to think of the poor wheelchair being crushed all the damn time! (cry2)

I know weight gain is linked to a ton of diseases and disorders. However, if you have a condition that does that to you, or if you are wheelchair bound and in turn cannot exercise, you should know how to modify your lifestyle to keep from being mistaken with somebody so morbidly obese than they cannot walk. So, I feel that in both cases, the fat person is at fault. Yeah, I know I'm a terrible person.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But what if your weight gain and the fact that you have to use a wheelchair are caused by the same thing? For example, I know a woman who had a serious operation which left her wheelchair bound for months and also as a result of this operation, she had to take steroid medication which made her gain a huge amount of weight no matter what she ate.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, that's temporary for starters. And even though she gained a ton of weight, eating less would probably make her gain less than if she pigged out. Also, you can exercise in a wheelchair. If her surgery was something very intrusive in her torso rather than legs, I can understand not being able to exercise. And if that was the case, it probably showed physically that she was not well as opposed to just fat.

If complications happen, you can be in a wheelchair for over a year - that's a long time to suffer people constantly being judgemental and rude. She told me that everywhere she went there were people whispering behind her back and making rude comments because they had decided she was getting "special treatment" she didn't "deserve". And yeah, it was something to do with her body rather than her legs, can't remember what though, but you couldn't really tell because she had painkillers which took away the majority of the pain and she could sit up straight and mostly function normally, she was just immobile.

I know someone who is 650 lbs because he just likes to eat. He uses motorized scooters at walmart and it pisses me off bc he has no medical condition to use them, he's just really bad at self control.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I eat all of the time and my BMI is lower than average, he isn't 650 lbs just because he likes to eat

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes he is. He even admits it. He eats 12 big mac meals a day. He loves to eat. He's 35 now and he's been constantly eating like that his whole life. His doctor says there's no medical reason for him to gain weight. He just doesnt like to move and he likes to stuff his face! And i doubt you eat the way he does so dont act like you know him better than I. And if you a low bmi after stuffing your face its either because you have wicked high metabolism or you eat generally healthy or you exericse.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Youre right, I don't eat as much as him. Didn't think that was possible

I work at a grocery store, and people use our motorized scooters, meant for the disabled and/ or elderly, because they are too fat to walk themselves around the store. And what makes it worse is that when they're checking out, it's all junk food and other things that are horrible for you.
