-177 People need to stop complaining about teen pregnancies. In the 1600's, most of them would have at least three kids, amirite?

People need to stop complaining about murder. In caveman times you could kill whoever you want and no one gave a shit.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

this isn't the 1600s though...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They had shorter life expectancies then...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's mainly because people died in childhood. Adults could easily live into their sixties and beyond, but so many kids died that the average life expectancy was lowered.

Back then it was rare for someone to live past 50-55.

I'll bet they were also married back then. How many teenagers are married nowadays?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

In fact you're correct. Girls would get married at the minimum age of 12 and boys at the minimum age of 14.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Why does it matter that they were married? How does wearing a ring make you a more qualified mother?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Troll in the dungeon!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Its because most of them were married. They got married much younger back in the day. And they reached mental maturity faster, therefore, society figured that they were ready to become mothers.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

What makes you think they reached mental maturity faster? Besides, what does a ring have to do with somebody's ability to raise a child?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Life was harder back then. They were raised to start working earlier than we are now, and their mentality wasn't, 'Oh, who am I gonna take to the prom?' It was, 'am I gonna be a good wife and mother?' At least that was the prevalent thing taught to them. And that is why their attitudes were different. And they actually respected their parents.

You weren't there. You have no data to back any of that up. My personal belief is that people act the same in every era of history. I think instead of thinking "who am I going to take to prom" they were thinking "who am I going to dance with at the next ball?". But that's just what I think.

I have the bible, I have books from back in the day, the crucible, etc.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

In what way is the Bible a good representation of life in the 1600s. I assume that you are aware that the Bible was not written in the 1600s. Even if it was, it is not really a good representation of common people. A bunch of terrible things happened in the 1600s from the 30 years war to the transatlantic slave trade; I think these events show that humans are just as irresponsible as ever.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I didn't say that the bible was written in the 1600's, I simply noticed that the mentality from the time of the bible to the 1600's are similar in several aspects.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't really see that at all. There were lots of different cultures and societies in both biblical times and the 1600s so I'm not really sure what you mean bu "similar in several aspects". I just realized how petty this argument is so I think I'm going to stop. Have a nice day!
