Oh! I was a tad confused until I read your comment. I was saying read (past) and then understand and it didn't make any sense.

It's called prediction. It's why most people who are fluent in English won't notice if you leave out a preposition, or sometimes even a whole word. It's also why you can read Tolkien faster at the end of the book than at the beginning-- you start to make predictions about what kinds of words he'll use, or what kind of sentence structure. (Applies to other authors too, of course.) I think it's really cool that our brains work like that. Then again, I love languages and am a total dork... >_>

I love the way the brain works in general! Especially the 'voice' we hear when reading silently. How do we hear what is not actually auditory?
