+276 Today on Yahoo I saw an article that back in 1795, the national debt was $75 million dollars. Now it increases by this amount every hour... something seriously needs to be done, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Or you know, 75 million then is worth about a quarter of a 75 million now.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So it increases the same amount in 4 hours, oh joy!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, the government was also really small.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well with inflation it would be * approximately* $948,975,345.74 so it really takes about 12.5 hours to increase that much.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

//The// national debt? Amirite is all from one country, now, is it?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Here you come with your anti-American bullshit...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

And I didn't even mention any country there, how nice of you to accuse me anyway.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

We all know you hate America, and we all know OP means America's national debt. Therefore, we all know you'll put your two cents in if someone doesn't specifically state that they're talking about the US even though the majority of users on here are American.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Lol, no, I just noticed it because I notice things like this. It's like if a post said "You hate that our school has the stupid teacher Mr. Derp who does bad lectures'. I just notice that they say //our// school as if we're all one little community. We're a whole fucking world. We're the internet.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Were you confused as to which country OP was referring to when you first read the post?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No, and that's irrelevant.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If you understood what the post was saying why do you feel the need to complain about the wording? You're making mountains out of molehills.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

http://ctrlv.in/65615 Sorry, you probably won't get the reference.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Exactly what I thought of.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Glad to see there's someone else on here who knows the show. cool

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Does Doofenschmirtz say something like that?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

In one episode he tries to literally make mountains out of molehills.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

ono Do you all not realise how every single time I make one tiny one-line comment, which is like a molehill in your analogy, and then you //all// gang up on me and you //each// try to comment and tell me that I'm being annoying and stupid and anti-American, and then this one tiny comment turns into a giant mountain that is a 10-comment thread. I don't care. I just said what I noticed. Fuck off, all of you.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I complain about wording just as a Grammar nazi would complain about punctuation. That is all.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The correct capitalization is "Grammar Nazi."

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yep, thanks.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

//What?// Now I've only been polite and said thanks to a comment, and yet I //still// get downvoted!? The fuck is wrong with you people. This just proves you downvote me for no reason. That single comment.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's impossible to even hint at anything that could slightly be anti-American on this site, because if you do you get a whole bunch of comments exactly like the ones that you received. And then they get a whole bunch of upvotes while you get a bunch of downvotes just because the OP made a mistake.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes, I've come to notice that with experience. It's happened like 50 times to me. Americans should stop being so fucking over-patriotic. Yes, I will get a ton of downvotes now to this comment, by those //same over-patriotic Americans//.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You and your you.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm nothing special. Any sensible unbiased person will see that this whole thread is bullshit.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I've only noticed it happen to Nacklefoodle because (s)he is a giant douche.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCRUQbuRxOI You're a terrorist.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

People have been saying that something needs to seriously be done for quite a while now. Yet nothing is being done.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The US government isn't compatible with "getting things done," please restart your system and try again.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well of course they get things done! In the past year alone they'd declared pizza a vegetable and threatened the internet.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

And they wonder why we're all so fat. ono

by Anonymous 12 years ago

http://www.usdebtclock.org/ Scary, scary numbers... D:

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes but what? Don't be one of the stereotypical people who shows a problem and cries "Oh no it's terrible something must be done!" without offering a solution. The problems, I think, are fairly clear. The solutions, not so much.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

do you have a link to this article??

by Anonymous 12 years ago

just kidding, found it. also the year is 1791, not 1795.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

ono I KNOW! i realized after my editing time ran out ughhh

by Anonymous 12 years ago

As someone who's taken first-year economics, I feel as if I have the authority to say some things on this topic: 1. Inflation - $75 million then is worth less now than then. About 4 times less, which is not much, but it's important. 2. Economic growth - It's important to consider the debt as a percent of the size of the national economy, as this tells us how serious of a problem it is in terms of how heavily the government would have to tax to make it back. The economy has grown over 1000x inflation-adjusted since 1800. This means that if the 1795 debt was adjusted for inflation and economy size, it would be worth about $300 Billion. 3. Deficit spending - Running a deficit during hard economic times avoids worse economic times. This takes the form of both tax cuts and government spending, both of which help the economy. These tactics are why there hasn't been another great depression. Whether you agree with the form of the Obama stimulus, the current recession would have been much worse without it. In conclusion, it is true that the current debt is much worse than ever before, but the time for austerity is not now.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wow. Thank you so much for opening our eyes to the fact that this is a problem. How has everyone been ignoring this?
