+569 If you found a winning lottery ticket in the trash, you shouldn't be legally forced to give any of the money to the person who bought it, amirite?

I'm not sure how they'd prove that they bought it.

This is the story: http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/1172212--winning-lottery-ticket-plucked-from-trash-lands-two-women-in-court-fight

That link won't work, but that's probably for the best. I'd bet it's a horrible story.

Oh it didn't work :( If I was the judge I would've thrown the case out. Sounds like bullshit to me. The security video in the store she bought it from didn't even sync up with the time the ticket was bought.

Okay, I went and found that article, and I feel personally offended by it. You can't claim that something rightfully belongs to you after you throw it away. There is no way in hell that the fault lies with the woman who found it, if the lottery machine was faulty as she said it was, then the lottery are the ones who owe her money, and if not, then she's a liar and a moron, and doesn't deserve the money.

My thoughts exactly!

Once you throw something away, it is open to the public. This is why it is completely legal for people to rummage through your trash once you put it out on the street.

This is one of those moments where "Finders Keepers Losers Weepers" really apply.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If you're looking through a bin you probably need the money more, really.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Legally, the money belongs to the person who cashes the ticket.

In Singapore, we have to provide out identification number when we buy the ticket, and we need the ID card that matches the number to cash it. Otherwise it's a jailable offence. Plus, our lottery is only a couple million at best, with maximum luck, not even the tens of millions in bigger countries.

That sounds like a very efficient system. We should try it so things like this won't happen haha. I wish I could get a million like lady in the story. I could finally start my own business and help other people out :)
