You can not call yourself a feminist and in the same breath call a girl a slut, amirite?
by Anonymous11 years ago
Feminist: a person advocating social, political, legal, and economic rights for women equal to those of men. Guys get called man whores too. And people that have a problem with a person being slutty have that problem with both genders, not just women.

Oh my god. Women get the shorter end of the stick. Yeah, guys get called names too, but that doesn't mean each side gets an equal amount of disrespect.

Fighting fire with fire. This is why I hate the term 'feminist'. That name doesn't imply fighting for equality in the slightest but female supremacy, as is often the preferred view of its supporters! Calling a (note, singular) girl a slut is a judgement of that individual. It has absolutely nothing to do with respecting the equality of genders. If anything it's identifying that the girl is annoyingly conforming to a sexist stereotype! I SUPPORT INDIVIDUALISM. GENDER IS IRRELEVANT!
To those mentioning the inbalance of the term slut, don't worry I too am of the thought that the word should more often be applied to relevant men.

I actually prefer humanist to feminist. And the problem is that most "feminists" are not actually feminists. The ideas have gotten so warped.
by Anonymous11 years ago
Maybe by society, but not by the individual feminist.
by Anonymous11 years ago
First of all that's not always true. And I'm talking about someone who calls themself a feminist and is advocating for woman but then still participates in the slut shaming culture we have in the u.s. It is very common for women who consider themselves feminists and who claim that there is a sisterhood and that women need to stick together to join in with everyone and shame a woman for enjoying sexual freedom. I just feel like its very contradictory and disgusting that's all.

That's wishful thinking. In Islamic countries, if a woman is raped, there is literally no way she can prove it was actual rape, unless the rapist actually admits it. Instead, she'll get punished for adultery. Not the man, the woman. I know this is an extremity but actually, no, a female having extramarital sex is much more controversial than a male in many places. This is probably because you can "prove" (accurate or not) if a woman lost her virginity and prosecute her but you can't for a man. Plus, everyone's heard of the "lock and key" metaphor for sex, right? "Why is it that a woman is called a slut for having sex but a man is praised?" That's another example. Men are "keys", to be used liberally, while women are "locks", only to be opened by one key. If that's not inequality then I don't know what is.

Maybe they get the short end of the stick in society, but the feminist doesn't do all those things to women.
by Anonymous11 years ago
Some do. All I'm saying is that those who do should not be called feminists.

I agree with this post simply because the word "slut" is based off the fact that in previous times and maybe even now, female sexuality is supposed to be discreet and reserved. If a woman deviates from that, then society looks at her like she's dirty whereas it's really not wrong at all. The simple act of calling someone a slut just proves you hold outdated views on sexuality, views that were active in misogynistic times. If you believe yourself to be a feminist, you are fighting for the acceptance of the female voice, in politics and in society. To call a woman a slut just shows you're still okay with slamming women for doing something that's accepted for men. As for the man-whore thing, the word itself is just an addition of the word "whore". It didn't originate applicable for men. A whore is always a female. Using that word in anything is un-feminist.
Besides, slamming people just for having (safe, consensual) sex is so backwards. Unless they are personally intruding on your life, just leave them alone.

Why not?
You can think someone is a slut and still want equal treatment of the sexes?
by Anonymous11 years ago
No. Because calling a woman a slut is perpetuating the idea that women can't be free with their sexuality which is a part of feminism, woman empowerment etc. They just don't go together.
by Anonymous11 years ago
This is a bit like saying that you can't ever call a black person a thief, because that perpetuates the stereotype that black people steal things. If you call a girl a slut, that doesn't mean that you think women should never enjoy sex. It means you don't think people should have multiple partners at once.
A person can be a slut regardless of gender.
by Anonymous11 years ago
You can call a person a slut regardless of gender, but women definitely get the shorter end of the stick. They are judging them unequally. Women are under more scrutiny for sexual 'purity' then men are, in general. The word 'slut' originates from being used towards females.
It's like more like saying you can't be anti-racist and call black people 'the N word'. You can call as many white people that as you like, it doesn't mean it isn't racist to call a black person that; it's directed at black people.
Calling people sluts is just policing what women do with their own bodies. Which is sexism. Feminists are for gender and sexual equality.

Slut isn't a thing! That is what I'm trying to say. There should be no word in our vocabulary meant for shaming someone who enjoys sex.
by Anonymous11 years ago
If the girl's clearly throwing herself around, and especially if she's bragging about it, you can't NOT call her a slut.
by Anonymous11 years ago
Why? Shes not allowed to brag about how many men she has bedded? But if a man did it it would be fine, even praised.
by Anonymous11 years ago
Ehh, I think it's obnoxious either way.
by Anonymous11 years ago
Whats obnoxious either way?
by Anonymous11 years ago
The bragging is obnoxious whether the person is male or female.
by Anonymous11 years ago
I agree. But annoying does not equal slut.
by Anonymous11 years ago
You keep pointing out what wouldn't make someone a slut, but what WOULD?
by Anonymous11 years ago
Nothing would, that's my point.
by Anonymous11 years ago
Ohh okay, I see where you're coming from on that.
by Anonymous11 years ago
Hm. You've made me think. I don't get super frustrated with people who use the word when they're severely pissed, however I would if they said someone was so "gay". So perhaps that's hypocrisy on my part? I would consider myself a feminist, and I do believe there's a huge double standard out there that the word slut encourages… but I've never treated the usage of the word slut with the same intensity as how I would approach other unjust situations. That's interesting.
Perhaps we should just not insult each other. That would be best, I think.
