It shouldn't be counted as an instrument if it's a piece of software, amirite?

You're right to a certain extent. Software is not, and will never be, an instrument. The method of input is the instrument, whether it be a keyboard, a hitpad, tables, or anything along those lines. Saying software isn't an instrument is like saying a piece of piano wire isn't an instrument. It's a part of an instrument. If that makes any sense.

I'm assuming you mean //musical// instrument. Because a computer most definitely **is** a tool.
As for a musical instrument, that's defined as an object that is used to produce music. So yes, a computer is a musical instrument. Maybe not in the traditional sense, though.

If vocal chords are considered an instrument, then software can be considered an instrument.
