+146 A good system for deciding when it's okay to joke about a tragic event is a day for each person that died. That way, you can joke about celebrity deaths the day after, but it gives more time to other events, like 8 years and 2 months to 9/11. That way there's mourning for all the people dead, and people get to make some pretty good jokes, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Like my dad died from Lyme disease yesterday. It really ticked me off.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

man, that bites

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Then we'll never be able to make Holocaust jokes.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't think its a good system at all. We can't make holocaust jokes until year 11001941, but we could joke about someone being raped the day it happened(assuming they didn't die).

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'd assume it means for people you don't personally know. Obviously, if a family member died, you wouldn't make jokes for a long time after. I guess it's still a crappy system though.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't care, I'm going to make jokes about whatever I want no matter who gets offended. Got a problem with that?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't know, it still feels too soon for a 9/11 joke.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think it'll be too soon until the War on Terrorism is over.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

-__- americans need to get over 9/11 it was sad and tragic but dragging it along the years does not help I am probably going to get a bunch of thumbs down for this but people need to understand this.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I just think it's sad that right after 9/11, the approval rating for the War skyrocketed, but now it's dropped to the lowest ever. I think it's sad that people forget so quickly, but I'm not going to be butthurt if someone makes a joke about it. I meant overall, it'd be nice to wait until its aftermath is actually over.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But the aftermath is done! And exactly it has been ten years. People should not forget but remember as a thing of the past right now people act as though it happened just yesterday starting rumors and theories all over the place placing prejudices on innocent people. People need to learn to accept it remember it and move on or else they will be stuck in their world a hatred and prejudice

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@Izzie's 1st comment: In all honesty, I didn't know anyone there. It had no direct effect on my life. I never really cared that much. I know it sounds bad to say, but I honestly don't care. I think it was bad, but the thought of it doesn't really hurt me. I feel the same way about African children. I think everything should be done to help the starving and I realize it's terrible, but I find it difficult to actually care. I guess I'm just not a very empathetic person towards strangers. Out of sight, out of mind. Rain on the downvotes.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@Izzie's second comment: we're still fighting a war over it. The aftermath is not over. @Softball8: I know, that's what I'm saying. I don't mind jokes because they're just that, jokes. I even laugh at some. But I still believe it's important not to pass off the whole event under the cover of those jokes; we need to remember what happened as long as it is still affecting us. Personally, things like the Holocaust do not still affect me, which is why I don't feel the need to remember them.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I know this is going to spark some flames, but is it just me, or is making fun of a celebrity's death actually a bit worse than making fun of an event years ago that killed a lot of people? I mean, if you're joking about the latter, it's just a kind of generic comment directed at no one in particular. Celebrity deaths are targetting someone specifically. I don't know. Personally, my treshold for 'tragic event' jokes is when no one is alive who was alive then. Or the the joke isn't about the actual deaths of people, but some other unrelated aspect. Or just don't make them at all, maybe?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think a joke about Michael Jackson's death would be more appropriate than a joke about the Holocaust, even though it involved more people. Even when the last Holocaust survivor is gone, that won't make jokes about it appropriate. The whole reason people like these jokes in the first place is that they're offensive. Look at how stupid dead baby jokes are. They aren't clever, the only reason people like them is because of the sheer fact that someone said something so horrible.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think it is more derived from the fact that almost all celebrities these days die from drug abuse. But in normal death conditions, they are exempted from the jokes and the general pilubloc tends to be more compassionate and sad for the loss of said celebrity.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But then we could never devilishly giggle at Holocaust jokes :'(

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Good.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Maybe we can pretend Jews aren't people on this one.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah, cuz that sounds like a great idea.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

ALMOST AS GOOD AS THE HOLOCAUST, AMIRITE?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I feel bad if I make a joke about a person/people who've died. I don't like to speak ill of the dead but it doesn't mean I don't laugh hysterically when someone else makes a joke about them.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Chaka Khan is every woman, so when she dies, we're probably never gonna joke about it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I have devised a much more comprehensive formula. Go through each dash. The final day count is the highest one you get. - 1 day for every person who died. Unless over 4,000 people died. Then it's automatically ten years. - Rate how close you are to a person harmed by the event on a scale of 1 to 10. 1, 2, and 3 = 1 day. 4, 5, and 6 = 1 month. 7 and 8 = 6 months. 9 and 10 = 1 year. - If the person is a celebrity, 1 day. - If the person is a hero, 5 years. - Rate the pain experienced by the person on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 and 2 = 1 day. 3, 4, 5, and 6 = 1 month. 7 and 8 = 6 months. 9 and 10 = 1 year. - If the cause of death was evil, 3 years. - If the cause of death was funny, 1 day. - If the dead include children, 3 years. - If the dead irresponsibly caused their own death, 1 day. - If the cause of death was suicide, 10 years.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

how can suicide be sadder than murder or dead children? that's whack

by Anonymous 11 years ago

because someone felt so worthless that they decided the only way out was not therapy, not just talking to someone, or even fucking alcohol, that they had to take their own life. (side note: my older brother committed suicide last summer. still not over it. people like you annoy me.)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Suicide is for pussies. Man even I felt a little sick writing this

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Suicide isn't only because some people feel worthless. Some commit suicide because they're in so much unbearable pain from a medical condition that they don't want to have to deal with it anymore. Euthanasia.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Isn't that what it Is though? Isn't euthanasia considered a whole different thing from suicide? Cause ive always felt that assisted suicide because of pain from a medical condition is the only understandable form of 'suicide'. That's just my opinion though

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The murdering of innocent children is sad. Suicide is fucking stupid. Your brother is a murderer. He killed himself because he felt worthless? He's not the victim. He's he criminal. His family and friends are the victims. Just because he was tired of life.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Both of these are equally horrible. Yes, it is sad that they hated their life so much that they had to commit suicide, but you have to remember to look at the other side. The soul is the one thing that no one can really take away from you. The person that committed suicide sort of had a voice in the decision. The victim murdered had no voice. it's just not right to take away someone else's life. It's your body, therefore it's your choice. No one should decide for you.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Its a laugh or cry situation. Of course, the joke has to be witty and funny. Otherwise you're just being a dick.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Unless the person died in a tragically funny way, then making a joke about the actual event of their death is almost always in bad taste. But the fact the person is dead shouldn't affect whether or not we make the joke. It's like saying we should only insult people to their faces, and not rant to others when the person isn't around.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Putting guidelines on jokes ruins the spontaneity of them, therefore making them not funny.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

There are so many holes in that system. If somebody gets raped, I can make jokes about it the same day because no one actually died.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't see how that's a problem.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If you got raped and people were making jokes immediately, you'd see the problem.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If they were quality jokes I bet I'd be happy they were making me feel better.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But...what if they sucked >_>

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't think that being constantly reminded of a traumatic experience would make most people feel better the day after it happened.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Anybody got any good jokes???

by Anonymous 11 years ago

When my biology teacher told me to name one thing you would find in a cell, apparently "Nigger" wasn't the right answer.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

9/11 jokes are plane wrong

by Anonymous 11 years ago

So if my family died today, i can LOL in a week?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

no matter how hard you try, people will be joking about everything at any given time.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Didn't Seinfeld or South Park or something already come up with the exact amount of time for a tragic event?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Oh fuck it. Here's a holocaust joke for ya. A rabbi, a rabbi, and a rabbi walk into a shower...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Why is this POTD? It sucks dick.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Then make a better one instead of being a little fag
