How is being religious not depressing. Oh yeah, you're too brainwashed to recognize how hypocritical and depressing it is.

Okay those first 3 comments were obviously made by the same person, who obviously needs to chill.

Being religious would definately be more depressing. Spending your whole life worshiping something that doesn't exsist.

Atheism isn't the opposite of being religious. Atheism just means you spend your whole life believing that everything you do is irrelevant. THAT's why it's depressing.

ok i'm an atheist, and i'm happier than most of my religious friends

A theist believes that everything they do is carefully considered by a superpower, who, if finding them lacking, sends them to eternal agony. An atheist believes that your actions are your own; that when people do the right thing, they do it because there is goodness in mankind, not because they fear the wrath of said superpower; that you can choose which direction to steer your life in, because you are not destined to die for someone else. It's funny how you can say our beliefs are depressing, since you clearly do not follow them.

Don't generalize. I'm a Christian, and God knows I'm not perfect. The only thing I ever had to do to "get into Heaven" was just accept the fact that HE was the one who suffered for me. Now that I'm a Christian, I actually want to be approved by Him, even though I know He already loves me and has forgiven me. The relationship between me and my God is NOTHING like you just described. And my life is so much more fulfilled and joyful than it was when I actually was an atheist. I actually was depressed before I became a Christian, and now my life is so fantastic. I would never go back to my old sinful habits because of how much they destroyed me.

Oh, whoops. That might have sounded a little bit un-loving and like I disliked and judged everyone who's not a Christian. I do. I love you even if you're gay, addicted to different things, etc. Of course I'm sad and heart-broken that you can't have the great life I've got, but I still love you.

Very well said!

Yeah its real depressing to be able to do all this fun stuff religious people don't, because they're not allowed to. Too bad I get to have fun in life.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I mean, religious people can do fun stuff...we just don't hurt people and things in the process. and i find being religious is very filling and it makes me feel better. you can not be religious and fell good, too. end of discussion, please.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

So you're saying atheists hurt people and things when they have fun?

Im not an aethiest, i just dont believe any being owns me, mortal or immortal. I believe i get to choose my own punishment or reward for how i lived my life. I hear the phrase sold your soul to the devil alot. I havent sold my soul to the being anybody else worships. I go to the mall and have friends, i laugh and enjoy my time in this realm. If i havent sold my soul to the devil or to the one other people worship why should they decide when i spend all of eternity?

how does religion affect whether or not you are happy? depression and lack of depression happen in all religious groups.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

that has nothing to do with happiness? this person is in some cult...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

you believe that nothing happens when you die. isn't that sad?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If the only reason you are religious is because you don't want to live a life where you don't go somewhere when you die than that is the SADDEST thing in the whole world. I'd much rather be religious because I actually want too not because I'm too depressed and scared to live a wonderful fulfilling life without the thought of eternal life. Being an atheist is not depressing. I'm more happy than I've ever been in my life since I've come out I was atheist. The only time it is ever depressing is when people put me down and shout at me about being an atheist. WOW I wonder who the people doing that are? (oh yea that's right, religious folks)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't believe they said that they were Christian because they WANTED something to happen after death, they said that those who believed that something DIDN'T happen after death weren't being very logical, and I agree. You can't live your life in such an ignorance, and it pains me to know that millions of people are. Yes, being an atheist IS depressing, but it's a depression you probably don't see yet. Do you want to give up eternal, happy life? Do you want spend eternity in misery? Because if you're atheist, that's what will happen.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

how is believing life after death logical?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

To everyone that says that atheism is SO amazing.. I ask this: Do you have a soul? or are you just a biological "machine" who's brain can be analyzed until true "responsibility" and "freedom" are reduced to their component parts? If so.. what meaning is their in anything really? If you've followed the logical steps until you've reduced your soul to its building blocks of chemicals etc. then doesn't that destroy any mystery in life? The wonder of love.. the beauty of the universe.. they're all just the result of evolution, that uncaring force, moving life along for no purpose other than to continue... Nihilism is the shadow of atheism.. many atheists avoid it somehow but it's there.. which makes me believe that atheists should stop bashing peaceful religion because it gives mystery, awe, and beauty that Science cannot equal.

To me the whole atheist lifestyle is very sad. You spend your whole life with work, bills, and parenthood etc... What's the point? You just cease to exist and except it like it natural to not want to life on. I'm not a religous or christian man. Put if believing in a being up there that watching over me forever is crazy or delusional don't make me sane cause the alternative is toooo sad and pathetic for me. Pointless life for 80 yrs the death.

Being and atheist makes me want to punch in a wall right now. Coming to terms with the fact that when I die, I die sucks. I'm not going to lie. But I would much rather take advantage of every opportunity I do have while I am living to have a positive effect. I'm not moral because I'm scared of going to hell, I'm moral because I want to make the most of what I have. Yeah, it's damn depressing, but it's better than living what I feel is a lie to feel more important and safe.
