-108 Slavery wasn't such a bad thing for the black race as a whole. If the slaves weren't taken to America, their descendants probably wouldn't be in America now and would be in Africa with their severe overpopulation and bad life expectancy. Amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

There is no justification for enslaving fellow humans.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Sorry, I ran out of time trying to edit this. It's not easy to word a post like this as I'm sure you can appreciate. Basically, I tried to say that if Americans didn't go to Africa and take them back as slaves, many black people in America would be in Africa instead. Africa is not really such a great place to live with all the poverty and all, so they should really be somewhat grateful for slavery in that regard.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I understand perfectly what you were trying to say, which is why I said what I did. There are pros and cons to everything, but one always outweighs the other. For example, child prostitution teaches kids how to handle money and run a business, but that doesn't make it right.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm not saying slavery was good for the slaves, I'm saying it was good for their ancestors.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

And I'm saying it doesn't matter.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You said the cons outweigh the pros, but they really didn't. At the time, yes it was terrible. But nowadays some black people are free in a good country, rather than all of them living in poverty in Africa

by Anonymous 11 years ago

By that logic the slaughtering of thousands of Jews, homosexuals, Poles, and gypsies is justified because now overpopulation isn't as bad as it could be.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

"Africa is not really such a great place to live with all the poverty and all" There are plenty of places in Africa without poverty, just as there are plenty places with poverty in the US.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I know. I chose to ignore that bit of ignorance.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Wunderscore, I don't think OP is trying to justify slavery. S/he is just making an observation.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That is one possibility, but if it's the case I don't know why (s)he didn't say that in the first place.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

"At the time, yes it was terrible" This was me saying that I agreed that slavery was terrible when it was happening. Clearly, I don't condone it

by Anonymous 11 years ago

This post, and your explanations completely reek of ignorance. 1. There is a lot of poverty in many African countries, but there are also many wealthy areas. Not everyone is living in a hut, starving, and suffering from AIDS. 1. A reason for the large poverty in Africa is when Europeans colonized African countries. They took all the gold, and diamonds, and hindered and, put down, and mistreated Africans. They may not have had cars, or tall buildings, or trains or whatever, but Africa was doing just fine before Europe came along, and they would probably be doing much better of Europe had never interfered.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

There's 40 million black people currently in the USA. Having that many more people in Africa, a country that's already overpopulated, would make things worse

by Anonymous 11 years ago

There wouldn't be that many people in Africa. Not every black American would be back in Africa. Because they wouldn't exist.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

"Africa, a country that's already overpopulated" Did you really just say that Africa is a country?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

yeah I did but I was tired and didn't notice. Sorry.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Typical ignorant american, africa is a great place to live. Sure, there's poverty, just like everywhere else on the fucken planet. They might have even had a better life if they stayed in africa.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

They're from Canada, not America. Look who reeks of ignorance now.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'd like to think that if a number of my ancestors had to go through the kind of adversities that black people went through for all those years but if they hadn't I'd live in Africa, I'd be at least a little thankful to them for it. Yeah, they had a bad time, but it affected //me// positively, as it did with everyone else whose ancestors were involved. That means that for the current black community, and as the post says "the race as a whole" slavery has benefited a lot of them. Obviously way too many people are disregarding what this post actually says and just disagreeing because they think slavery is bad.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That was basically my point, but I worded it badly.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You worded it alright, people on amirite are just closed minded when it comes to controversy.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Actually, it didn't affect you at negatively or positively. If it weren't for slavery, it's highly unlikely you would've ever been born, whether it be in a good country or a bad one. The only thing I would understand is if you were grateful for slavery because it led to your birth. Besides that, it makes little sense because you wouldn't have been born anyway, so you wouldn't have had to suffer in a poor country.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

ono

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Care to elaborate?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Why should anyone ever be thankful and glad for completely unnecessary centuries of horrendous treatment and oppressive brutality of millions of innocent people just so they can eat hamburgers and have an iPad? Because apparently as long as you have your designer wardrobe and a Ferrari who gives a shit about the nightmares of slavery? As long as you have a pile of money to bathe in, you'll be grateful for them killing as many people as they damn well please, right?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That is an interesting theory. However, just because some good has come from it doesn't mean the thing itself was not bad. Slavery was and still is bad, even if a few "good" things might have come out of it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

This is like arguing in favour of the Holocaust because of the medical discoveries that came from torturing Jews.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I guarantee you that if your life was saved by the research acquired from those studies you would appreciate them. Just like it's a possibility that because more black people live in America because their ancestors were brought over possibly saved some of their lives. I'm not trying to say slavery and torture is amazing, I'm trying to say there are benefits.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But it's called putting other people in front of you. Why should millions suffer so that one can be happy? That doesn't seem fair. I would rather never be born if i was African.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't disagree with what you are saying. I'm just saying that this is a very crude way of saying it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Link?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Slavery still caused thousands of African Americans to be segregated in the 1900s. Those were descendants and they didn't benefit. Sure they lived in a more modern society, but not being treated as an equal human being is not a benefit.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Really? It's because of places like USA and the British Empire exploiting these countries that many of them are still LEDCs today. Places in Africa used to have a lot of oil and such, but what do you know, the British Empire took all that when they took over. Same with the USA. They exploited those countries 200 years ago, and continue to do so to these days, which is partially WHY it is so poor now. People were saying this back in the days of slavery too - that they were doing those poor slaves a favour by bringing them to their wonderful, flawless "civilised" country. No. You did not do them any favours whatsoever, now or ever. You exploited them, and since racism is still around, continue to do so to this day. *Note although I say "you", I mean pretty much any Western country. USA is not the only country at fault here, most MEDCs nowadays got that way from exploiting others.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Who the fuck else would think of this?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Me

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Oh. I didn't see that, sorry. It's funny that people think I'm the biggest idiot of all time for saying something like this but people actually agreed with you.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah. The climate of votes can vary a lot from month to month. That was back in February though.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Gee, I think I'll do those poor, poor, underprivileged and uncivilized Africans a favor by beating them to death, branding them with an iron, raping them, treating them like animals, and giving them literally zero rights! Gee whiz, them silly Africans generations later will sure appreciate my kind soul! I'm such a Samaritan! I shall enlighten them to the beautiful society I call my homeland, because who gives a FUCK about their own homeland? Who gives one bit of SHIT about their own family? That's right, no one! It's crowded with germs and wild animals anyway! //I'M DOING THEM A FAVOR.// People back then actually thought like that. They thought Africans were dumb and that their culture was disease-ridden and needed enlightenment to the "glorious" country. They thought slavery and all its results were a good thing. Apparently we haven't grown out of that mentality yet. I'll just hope it won't take too long.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Hmm, I'll look at the first sentence of this post and then rant because he obviously condones slavery! - you

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Hmm, I'll look at how some modern black people live privileged lives and accredit it to how amazing slavery was! - you

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That was not really my point at all. Look, I already explained it three times I don't want to do it again. If you are so closed minded that because I mentioned slavery at all without berating it, I must support it relentlessly I don't really want to waste time discussing it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Ooh, you explained it three times, what a strain that must be to your mental integrity. Actually, I'm not the one who thinks slavery is ok, at all, not one teeny little bit. You know why? Because I don't think life is horrendous and terrible and nightmarish in all of Africa just because they don't have iPads everywhere. Just because a place isn't Western doesn't mean it's a poor rundown place. If you said people should be thankful their parents went through the troubles of immigration to get here, I support it fully, because that was their CHOICE. Holding someone against their will to come here isn't something to be proud of.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No, but if I had to explain to to every moron who didn't get the point of my post it would start to annoy me. Let me try to dumb it down for you. If your grandparents were kept as slaves (who of course were not always treated badly, just as not all Africans live in poverty) so you would live in a place with a much higher life expectancy, would you still complain?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm afraid I'm too straight up dumb to understand your complicated way of thinking. Sorry, oh One Who Is Impeccably More Intelligent Than An Imbecile Such As I. Here's what's going on in my Neanderthal head: Say my grandparents were slaves, and now I live in grand ol' America, where the life expectancy is quite high. If my grandparents were not slaves, I likely would not have been born, therefore I would suffer nothing at all. It's not like without slavery I'll be living in a sewer, because without slavery, I wouldn't exist to possibly even understand good vs bad. Plus I wouldn't want my grandparents to go through that even if I would be born. If I'll live a few years less to save my grandparents' pain, so be it. Higher life expectancy =/= higher quality of life. If I had to choose between living 35 years with equality and 100 years dealing with racism and oppression, I'd choose the 35. Obviously most blacks don't deal with that today, but they sure as hell did in the 60's, and they're included in "the race as a whole" But you know since apparently if you have a different opinion, you're dumb as fuck. Which I'm not denying, but it's irrelevant on an opinion post.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Let me say this as simply as possible. There are black people in America because their ancestors were slaves, so they were born in America. Does that make sense? Now, if their ancestors were not moved to America, they would have remained in Africa. Therefore, their descendants would be born in Africa. Get it? There is more poverty in Africa than the United States. This is a fact, as evidenced by their lower life expectancy. I'm not saying if slavery hadn't existed all black people would be fucked or that thanks to slavery all black people are privileged as shit. I'm saying that there's a higher chance of death or poverty in Africa than the United States. Do you understand?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Not necessarily. You're forgetting Africans can immigrate here. Plus, not every black is from Africa. Not every single black person is here because of slavery. So by saying "thanks to slavery, all black people are privileged as shit" or that they would "be fucked" is really frankly ignorant. The only role slavery played here was getting most black people to America. Privileged or not is a different story. Everyone in America should feel grateful they're here, but the method of getting here isn't something to be proud of. Maybe you didn't know this but people live good lives in Africa. There are people poor as shit there but same here. Yes, the rate is higher, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't have found happiness there, too. A lot of blacks today would be perfectly happy if they remained in Africa. America isn't the greatest place on earth, and I don't see how it's worth it to be grateful about the tragedy of your ancestors. There are perfectly fine places in Africa where the lifespans are pretty similar to America. They're not barbarians.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

So by saying "thanks to slavery, all black people are privileged as shit" or that they would "be fucked" is really frankly ignorant ^Here's where I stopped reading. I blatantly said in my post that I'm NOT saying that at all.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I suppose this is what you'd consider the bright side?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Okay, what this guy really should have said... and what I think he really meant, was this: Though slavery was horrible, some good did come out of it for the millions of current afro-americans living in the US rather than poverty. It doesn't justifiy, make it good or right... but at least it isn't all bad.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah, and all of that forced manual labor is really paying off now before most black people are naturally more athletic! ono

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You know, by the negative response this post got I thought I was pretty stupid for posting it. Thank you so much for this comment for making me feel a lot better about it.
