+261 Rejecting the Catholic Church because of what they did in Medieval times is like rejecting Volkswagen because of its previous connection with the Nazis, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I reject volkswagen because it's shit.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No. What the Catholic Church did in Medieval times shows what happens when religion becomes too influential. Same with the majority of middle-eastern countries' governments. And there's plenty of reasons to reject the Catholic Church for modern crimes, such as willfully hiding the molestation of children.

That's a complete bullshit stereotype and it's annoying as hell when people buy into it. And I reject black people because they steal TVs, both are crap mentalities

by Anonymous 11 years ago

What the hell are you talking about? Are you saying I'm making a stereotype about the Catholic Church by saying they willfully hide the molestation of children? Because there's only one Catholic Church, and that's been uncovered... And if you're saying I'm stereotyping about the consequences of religion becoming too powerful, name one instance where there were no consequences of an overly powerful religious force.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@YeahIAm Name one instance where there were no consequences of an overly powerful secular force. @John But besides that, the Catholic church today runs on the same systems and governments that it did then with only slight reformation. Not trying to bag on Catholics but your point wasn't a very good one

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well, just about every powerful modern government is secular, and no consequences have resulted directly from their secularity, so just about every current Western government.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I thought that most current western governments face war, poverty, loss of right's and freedoms, controlled economies, etc. I don't see how any of these problems relate to religion more than government in general

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Umm... current western governments are generally developed and prosperous. There's currently a recession, but all the issues you listed aren't really happening on a large scale...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My only argument is that completely stupid thing circling that all catholic priests are pedophiles and the catholic church in total condones it and keeps it hidden so members won't be consequenced.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm Catholic and the misconceptions some people have are just purely ignorant. Former "friends" have accused me of worshiping Mary, saints, and/or the pope with no reasoning or proof. I had someone tell me I was going to hell..Like, oh what a Christian thing to say, that I'm going to hell...just because a member of a faith believes or does something doesn't mean everyone agrees. Do I believe that priests molesting children is okay? Obviously not, and another is with homosexuality..I am for gay marriage and I'm sure many other Catholics are. Regarding this post, Hitler was "Christian", but he thought mass genocide was fine, but I'm sure most Christians and people of all different religions (and rational, sane human beings) don't agree with that.

Perfect.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That's rejecting you for your Catholicism, not rejecting the Catholic Church for their crimes. They're completely different.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't see how it's completely different, as Catholicism gets a bad rep, which in turn causes others to judge you based on the poor actions of certain members of that religion...if that makes sense at all..

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well, most people realize that the Catholic Church is a powerful establishment that doesn't hold the views of all Catholics. I'd compare hating the Catholic Church to hating Germany when Hitler was in power: you hate a central power that you deem evil, despite realizing that there are many individuals (Catholics/Germans) that are powerless to stop them. Sure, the hatred of the German government has probably led to some jokes and mild discrimination, but you can't blame someone for hating Nazi Germany, just like you can't blame someone for hating an establishment which covered up molestations for fear of having their public image worsen.

I see what you're saying; but if any cliche metaphor applies here it'd be "don't hate the team, hate the player."

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But that phrase (it's not a metaphor =P) goes along with what I'm saying. I'm saying hating the player (hating the Catholic Church) is different than hating the team (all Catholics), and that hating the Catholic Church is perfectly acceptable.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

nope

by Anonymous 11 years ago

What...?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Except the catholic church still exists.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You think Nazis don't exist anymore? Uhh hate to break it to ya...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

There's a big difference between hating the two. Volkswagen did not ACTIVELY participate in the actions of Nazi Germany. The Catholic Church, however, believed that their actions during the Spanish Inquisition were just tough love for heretics. I'm not saying that all Catholics are bad, but the Catholic Church itself has shown a long, seedy history of killing those that opposed them based on the orders from poor choices in (human) leaders.

My mom actually boycotts VW for that reason. Or used to at least
