I don't know about our own generation not liking our own music, but for Adults there's actually something behind it. As we age our brain doesn't handle dopamine as well so it starts to stagnate. We lose the ability to get that rush from hearing a new piece of music, and write it off as bad. You can get a taste of this by trying to watch shows meant for toddlers. To most adults the songs aren't anything special and very annoying at times. But for children, flooding the brain with dopamine isn't exactly tough, so the song is an easy quick pay off.

I don't know, I am a teenager and yet most of the songs directed towards my age group are really awful.

I think within in our own generations, it comes down to personal preference. We're at the steady level of being able to enjoy new music, it's just what's coming out doesn't appeal to us on a personal level.
