+76 People say that you're not supposed to understand modern art, that's why it's beautiful. Going by that logic, saying "Dog truck eat heart airplane run yellow porcupine ambulance nifty alakazam George Harrison create leaf fan serendipitous glory hole" makes me a linguistic genius, amirite?

Who says you aren't supposed to understand modern art the whole point of modern art is interpreting the symbolism behind it what are you on about what

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well, that's what I heard from a modern art enthusiast, that you're not supposed to understand it.

Link?

One of my friends said it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Oh. Well, I think your friend is wrong :$

Language and art are different forms of expressing emotion and meaning. Saying "i went and swam laps today" and a painting of someone swimming laps are totally different. I think that not understanding things can be beautiful, and so can being an expert about something. But like the comment above mine said, art is meant to be viewed by a viewer, and said viewer can see a thousand different meanings in just one work of art, and none of them is wrong, because it is a perception.

Someone had fun with this post :P

Wow! That statement was biblical in its clarity.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

all I read was "glory hole" OP do you know what this means?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'd call that sentence art (if that was the intention) but not really anything linguistic.

Modern art isn't impossible to understand; it's just less obvious, and more open to interpretation.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Which could allude to laziness. "It's whatever you want it to be." [Most] modern artists are just artists who lack actual artistic talent.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Doesn't that sound like a pre-existing bias? Discounting a piece of art because you don't immediately understand it is just as lazy.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't discount a piece of art because I don't understand it. I discount it because of the poor quality of the work. I'm not going to waste my time on a crudely done piece trying to 'figure out what it means'

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But how can you know if it's "poor quality" if you don't take any time to try to understand it?

If I see something that looks like this: https://s3.amazonaws.com/images.charitybuzz.com/images/49975/original.jpg?1319036252 http://www.plastolux.com/blog/wakely3.jpg http://images.fanpop.com/images/image_uploads/Anda-Kubis-Oils-modern-art-718607_1920_1440.jpg I'm not going to waste my time on it.

Modern art is just a bunch of colours and shapes that look good together. There's no subject or anything, which is why it can't be understood. Words are just a way to convey meaning, and without that, they are nothing. THat being said, if you put it as lyrics in a song and the rhythm was good, that could be considered art. A lot of songs I hear don't have any sense i nthe lyrics, but sound good anyway.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Not all art must have meaning. Some art exists simply because someone thought it looked nice.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Why, yes it does.
