Yeah. They need not-so-attractive people for movies and stuff too.

It has to do with the role. It's going to be a pretty big deal if you're casting James Bond, or soemone described as attractive in a book. Also, even for people who have a neutral impression on readers, a movie is probably going to make more money if the audience doesn't rave to stare at a guy's ugly mug for half the scenes. That being said, real acting skill should play a bigger part.
