+195 Nowadays people concentrate too much on the bad going on in the world. We need to know that there is, in fact, good in the world, and we should all embrace it a little more. amirite?

The point of focusing on the bad is to attempt to create more good things and leave behind one more bad thing. If we just focus on the good societal progress comes to a halt

I know, but what I'm saying is we don't focus enough on the good things, and way too much on the bad.

I wouldn't say "nowadays." It's a cultural shift-- in the medieval ages, people were generally pessimistic because they believed humans were worthless, but in the renaissance, there was a whole movement of optimism because of the idea that humans can attain salvation and stuff. But of course, there will always be pessimists no matter what. I agree with the post. I just had to comment on the nowadays portion because that makes it sound like it started 10-20 years ago.

A study has actually shown people concentrate on the good. When put in a brain scanner and asked their about the chances of bad things happening to them and good things happening to them, they usually thought the bad thing, like their chance of getting cancer or being hit by a car, was a lot lower than their chance of getting cancer actually is. When they were told their real chance of the bad and good things happening to them, they were retested. If they previously guessed that their chance of something good happening to them was lower than it actually was, the second time around they guess they had a higher chance than before and actually listened to what they were told. When they were told the chance of something bad happening to them was higher than they originally thought, the second time around they still guessed they had about the same chance as they had guessed before. You think you're gonna win the gold, so you train and train and train. You must think you're going to win the gold in order to get the silver. When our ancestors migrated to new places, they had to believe there was something better in a place they'd never een before than where they currently were.
