I hate it when people say that. I heard so much of it when my dad died and it annoyed me every time.

Yes, actually. "I'm sorry" sounds like pity, and nobody wants to be pitied. A good hug or a "that really just sucks" would be a lot better than "I'm sorry," which is really what people say when they have nothing to say. It's not heartfelt, it's filler.
