+80 Americans: You've curious about what people who want to be politically correct in other countries say instead of African-//American//, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Anglo-African. But not really. They're just black people.

My French teacher always calls them "black Africans".

Whatever you do, if you're in the UK, do NOT assume a black person has African origins. If they're from the Caribbean they'll get seriously pissed off.

^ I'm Australian, and it's more likely for a black person to be Aboriginal or Caribbean/West Indes than African descent. I'd just call a person black unless they told me they preferred to have their race acknowledged as Aboriginal or Afro-Australian.

I say black instead of African-American and people in my school ask "Are you racist?" -.-

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's like, "No, you're just retarded."

Nah, I'm not that critical. Most of the time. But it's actually because I have a Haitian friend, which sort of forced me to realize "Hey, not every person with a dark skin tone is from Africa or is American. So why am I calling them all African-Americans??"

Black.

I love you. Black people.

I'm American and I say black. If they can call me white, why shouldn't I be able to call them black? It is not a racist term in and of itself. Calling someone black does not mean I consider them to be beneath me.

This is why I specified "politically correct," not "morally correct" or some other form of the term. I completely agree with you.

I'm black, and that's what I call myself. This is probably a first, but I don't like the term "African American."
