+345 It's kind of interesting how, when diagnosed with something fatal, people will often say, "I'm dying." If you think about it, in reality we're all dying, just at different paces, amirite?

Except if someone comes to you with news of being diagnosed with terminal cancer, telling them we're all dying is gonna make you look like a massive asshole.

Very true. There are times to be sensitive and times to be blunt, and the two don't often overlap.

If you think about it, people don't like to think about death. In fact, our minds actively perform many different things to avoid thinking about it. The news of inevitable death will force everyone to stop and reconsider their life's work, ambitions, goals, and/or priorities.

You have a good point, but I don't see the reconsideration of one's entire life a necessarily bad thing. People these days spend far too much time planning for the future instead of enjoying the present. I know it's an overused old cliche, but we all really should live like we're dying because we are.

"People don't think about death/their morality." I never understood this, either because I always think about death and it doesn't seem like an odd subject to contemplate, or I cannot possibly consider the feelings one with a terminal disease would go through...either way I think it would be interesting to GET some deadline, like how would my attitude about life change if I knew I had 6 months to live. I've never met anyone that I knew with a terminal disease, but I don't think I would treat them any differently

Cancer is a side effect of dying.
