-239 Minimum wage should be abolished. If someone wants to work for $2 they should be allowed too, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I don't think I've ever met people who //wanted// to work for 2 bucks usually, it's boss man/lady who wants them to work for so low

by Anonymous 11 years ago

And if no workers want to, then the boss won't have any workers.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Such an abolishment would only have the most desperate people working for employers and the unemployment rate would increase unprecedentedly because everyone would realize that government handouts are much better than working for $2/hr. (I am assuming you meant $2/hr and not just $2 because the latter is far too ambiguous)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Get rid of government handouts too.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Do you own a buisness and are you the greediest person on this earth? Do you want to see people with absolutely no money for their families?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If I hired for only $2 I would go out of business...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

the workers won't //want// to do it but workers will //need// do it because they'll most likely choose meager money over no money they'll be stuck which stinks

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Just because one company pays $2 doesn't mean that all the others will pay $2...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

true but the possibility of even one company doing that stinks waiters and waitresses deal with that because their allowed tips some places don't have good business so the workers are getting about $2.50 an hour with poor tips I disagree with the first part of the post but I agree with the second part if someone truly wants to work for that low (not just need) then that's up to them but then that makes the minimum wage sorta obsolete so then I'm back to disagreeing

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah we should just bring back slavery!

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Makes sense. y

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Except it isn't forced work... It's totally optional...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

When you don'thave any money ffor your family you kinda have to force yourself to work.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yes, but you weren't born on a farm and whipped until you got to work with your whole family and sold to others.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Except if a company is hiring for $2 an hour and nobody works there because no one wants to be paid only $2 an hour, the company will go out of business..

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah then the economy would crash and you'd say, "welcome back great deppression"

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Smart businesses would hire for more than the other businesses so they actually could employ people...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

So what you are trying to say is every business would hire for more?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yes.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

So you want the government to focus their time on doing paper work to change the minimum wage but all businesses will rise to atleast the old minimum wage, that's what you are hoping for? It seems like a complete waste of time

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Why would it rise to the old minimum wage?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Because that's what workers would demand

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Businesses would start by paying what they think the job is worth (which is determined by the market/people who are willing to do the job). So let's say I own a fast food restaurant and I'm only willing to pay someone $3/hour to do nothing but flip burgers all day. After all, it requires hardly any skill which makes it relatively an easy position to fill. If nobody applies for the job, then that tells me I need to either raise the wage for that position or go without a burger flipper. It's not a business's responsibility to feed an employee's children. It's the individual employee's responsibility and I would hope that anyone with a family would seek out a job that pays higher than $3/hr.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

This sounds like a terrible idea.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I wanna work for 100 dollars an hour. But wait, how much you get payed is determined by your employee, not you... If anyone DID work for 2$ an hour, it wouldn't be because THEY want to, it would be because their employer wants them to.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

A person working for $2/hour would be a mutual agreement between both the employee and the employer. If a person doesn't //want// to work for $2/hr, then they should look for a job that pays more, otherwise they're not very smart. You also have to consider that a $2/hour job would most likely be one that requires very little skill or knowledge (like bagging groceries, flipping burgers, etc.). It's a job that's very easy to replace and would most likely be filled by teenagers (I say teenagers because they typically don't have much work experience). And we can't rule out promotions and raises. If a person proves to be a valuable asset to a company, then the company will raise the person's wage because it doesn't want to lose a great employee. Finally, the main reason getting rid of minimum wage would be a good thing is that by paying employees lower wages, a company can reduce costs. If a company can reduce costs, they can reduce their sale price to customers (to increase the amount of sales). So we end up with lower costs of goods needed to live.

I thought this was some failed attempt at being funny. Then I read the comments and realized that OP was dead serious.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I know

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm bored. Let's argue about it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well, that is what amirite is for I suppose. Preferably spirited debates to actual arguments.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

OP's correct. Raising the minimum wage doesn't just magically solve everyone's problems. It creates an imbalance in the natural flow of the economy. While the intentions may be good, the result isn't worth it. A rise in minimum wage creates 1) a rise in unemployment because employers can't afford to pay all of their employees the higher wage for the jobs in which these employees are assigned to do. 2) a rise in prices to consumers because businesses must adjust to new labor costs. To make things simple, the process of the free market should go something like this: Consumer creates demand -> Business relieves the demand by finding resources to fulfill consumer needs (by utilizing raw materials, goods, and most importantly **employees**) -> after getting paid, employees then turn into to consumers who create demand as shown in Step 1. As you can see, it's a mutual relationship as with most human interactions. Unfortunately, the government becomes involved and screws the entire system up like a little kid with sticky fingers touching your computer screen and then trying to make it better by cleaning it with a dirty sock.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Who would turn down extra money?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Uneducated people who don't understand the economy. It sickens me how many downvotes this has.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I, too, am surprised by how many down-votes this has. I initially had the knee-jerk reaction of thinking it's a bad idea, but the OP makes a solid point. People often forget that the workers are the core of a business. It's not like the businesses will have infinite money whether or not people work there. They need workers, and thus will try to make the job as attractive as possible. I'm not going to vote, though, because I know next to nothing about economics. Unlike most people, I don't really like to give my opinion when I have no idea what I'm talking about. At the very least, I //know// that I don't know what I'm talking about.
