+73 People have a tendency of believing whatever makes them happiest. In reality it only sets them up to be hit that much harder by the inevitable, unwelcome truth, amirite?

Well, that may be a little exaggerated, but I see the logic behind it. I disagreed because it's not necessarily so

you're right. a truth is a truth, a fact of life. I try not to carry emotion about facts because no matter how you feel about a fact, it's not going to change how it is. it'll always remain true. one of my favorite television shows, House MD had sooo many lessons/facts on life in each episode and this was a big one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iQXZPrE8xo go to 1:55 where Huge Laurie and Robert Leonard talk about this very subject.

That's what I'm trying to change about myself, actually. I've never been able to fool myself into believing whatever would make me happy, therefore I'm not happy. So I've been trying to allow myself to be fooled in order to be happy. Ignorance is bliss.

a great quote from Stephen Colbert says basically, not to be afraid to be a fool, because you can't be both young and wise. young people who pretend to be wise of the world are just cynics, which is disguised as wisdom. i also used to be kind of cynical and have learned to lighten up and accept that i'm just a young fool and can make mistakes and be wrong or ignorant about some things. i don't confuse wisdom for intellect however.

I don't think it's impossible to be wise and young (depending of course on how young you mean. It's a relative term). I just think most that are, are too humble to realize it. Wisdom is relative, too. A young person can be a little wise.

Well if the world is indeed the way cynics say it is, then being cynical is the same as being wise.

cynics really are not that wise. they see the world in a pessimistic view that can distort the truth. wisdom comes with age so you could say you are more wise now than 5 years ago. but 10 years from now, you'll be looking back on yourself, laughing and say "g i guess i was pretty dumb then, and i thought i knew everything". it's like the saying you can't be old and wise if you weren't young and foolish. because we all learn from making mistakes and it's best to make them now in youth than later in life. anyway i was trying to help you see that you don't have to be so cynical and pretending to be the wise one, which i take it is what makes you somewhat unhappy.
