+40 Ghosts are said to be cold, so maybe they absorb heat energy and store it, so be converted to kinetic energy later on. It's possible that ghosts don't violate the laws of physics by moving things without having mass, therefore not having kinetic energy, amirite?

Well there needs to be something to manipulate that force...

Like a ghost? We're assuming ghosts exist here, and it doesn't need o be a force. You could transfer kinetic energy directly to an object, but there's no such thing as pure kinetic energy in our plane of existence. It's like you can theoretically always pour water over someone, but there's no way for us to do it without a container to move it over their heads. Mass is like the container for kinetic energy. I'm just saying, ghosts don't necessarily violate the law of conservation of energy.

Well, when people say ghosts can't exist because they break the laws of physics, they aren't usually referring to the law of conservation of energy. They're usually referring to the fact that it's visible, intangible, and floating... and a former human

There aren't any laws against any of those. If they're made of energy, gravity won't affect them. You also can't touch them, but you may be able to see them. It could be like ectoplasmic energy or something because it's definitely not any normal energy.

Energy would disperse naturally, so there's need to be something holding that energy together. It would need to be some sort of physical source, which would need to have mass. And what is ectoplasmic energy? It doesn't sound like a real thing.

The energy would expend itself. That's why ghosts don't just grow more powerful with age. They absorb x joules every second, and expend x joules every second to keep themselves together. I;d assume they can take more if they wanted, so give a surplus. Ectoplasmic energy is a placeholder name I used for whatever it is that ghost would be made of if they existed.

Energy is not composition. And what form would the energy be in? Motion, heat? And energy cannot compose something. Energy will dissipate naturally if not coming from a constant source, and you can't just use energy to gather more energy. It would need to be something that has mass to make it to use and hold energy.

And there needs to be some sort of brain or system to communicate the wills of the ghost moving.

Ghosts are departed souls. Surely //that// is enough to coordinate movement.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well, according to science that wouldn't be enough, as they wouldn't be material and be able to move themselves in that way or manipulate objects, but screw that. Just because you don't know how something happens doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Forces need something to convey them, but energy does not. It's just impossible for us, as material beings, to use anything other than force, and thus mass. If we could manipulate energy by itself, as I assume ghosts would be able to, we could transfer kinetic energy directly to an object.

I imagine that ghosts have mass, but because they exist on a plane separate from the physical plane, their mass doesn't effect material objects. Occasionally ghosts can transcend from one plane to another, but mass does not always carry over from one plane to another, so they don't always maintain enough presence to exert force.
