+109 One of the absolute biggest detriments to society's understanding of and compassion for mental illness is psychologically healthy people trivializing disorders by claiming to have them; whether it be through an attempt to appear unique, or through ignorance. Amirite?

I hate it when people say, "I'm so OCD about this!" not realizing how debilitating OCD can be. The mental illnesses most trivialized are probably ADHD and depression – the fault of psychiatrists overdiagnosing them and people thus thinking that they're just mild conditions. Everyone seems to forget that part of the definition of a mental illness it that it's pervasive and makes the person unable to lead their life normally.

We were just discussing this in psychology. Mental illnesses have definitely lost their once held "negative" image among people, as a lot of kids go around saying "Oh I have OCD" or "I was so depressed last year but now I'm okay" and things like that, as if that makes us respect them more or something. I just want to tell those kids that if someone was clinically depressed or diagnosed with OCD, they wouldn't be able to function like you are doing right now.
