Stereotypes don't have to be negative, amirite?
by Anonymous11 years ago
the "positive" ones bug people too

True but unless you are talking about the printing industry (plate cast style printing on a press) they are still prejudicial even if they are positive.

Yep that was the point I was trying to make. It doesn't have to be something negative to be stereotypical and prejudiced

By "negative", do you mean "have a negative effect"? Or do you mean that assumptions of positive traits are just as bad as that of negative ones?
by Anonymous11 years ago
Wouldn't you "Agree" either way?

I don't think stereotypes can have a positive effect. They cause us to have unreal expectations of a race, and can pressure people to conform to something that isn't natural to them.

I meant that a stereotype can have a positive quality I guess. For example, all Asians are smart is a stereotype although it isn't as offensive as, say, all black people steal

I agree that it isn't as offensive, but there aren't any stereotypes that have a "good" effect on the world. They're on a continuum of offensiveness, and the least offensive of all is an absence of stereotype altogether.
