+341 Art and music are WAY more important than anyone really thinks about...I mean, the world would be nothing without it. So why are schools so fast about cutting art and music classes, rather than other ones? They're just as important as educational classes, amirite?

I wouldn't say they're just as important, but they are definitely a must in the schools. Everybody needs a creative output and schools help with that...when they're not slashing budgets and classes.

And they're so quick to cut sports. They want to cut everything that will get us scholarships and into a good college, but not useless classes and stuff, like expensive Blackberries and offices for administrators, or Mandarin Chinese so people can take their money to other countries [my school said they offer Chinese so people can become successful in China, when America is having trouble, too]

Quick to cut sports? My school is just the opposite. Our entire drama program got cut, and our music programs get basicly no money, but our football team gets all the funding they want.

I phrased this incorrectly. The "less popular" sports, like track [a team I'm on] and crew are at risk of being cut. The drama program is a centimeter away. Football, baseball, lacrosse, and basketball, however, will get plenty of equipment.

Oh sorry. Yeah, funding for our less popular sports is hard to come by, too. Even though our soccer and track teams are 1000 times better than our football team, who wins about one or two games per season.

SO true. Our track team is one of the best in the country, and it's a no-cut team, unless you start skipping. But, for some reason, schools NEVER have money for important stuff like that, but there's plenty of money for the administrations' high salaries.

Administrators and superintendents make too much for what they do. Teachers and a few good secretaries are all a school really needs, plus one principal to be in charge. There's no need for assistant principals for every grade level. Their money could be put to much better use, like your track team, or my band.

Extracurricular activities, music, and art are very important! They stimulate the mind, and also give a break from memorization of formulas, translations, English terms, etc. It's kind of ironic, if you think about it. If we didn't need to learn, all of those people wouldn't have jobs. Because of us, millions of jobs are created. Why is our education and chance at a successful life compromised?

It's so backwards. People complain that kids don't get a good education, yet cut budgets for extracurriculars, and lay off teachers left and right, its so stupid. If I can see the system doesn't make sense why can't the people in charge, right?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The people in charge are money-hungry. Some earn at least $500,000 a year. If anything THEIR salaries should be cut. It's even crazier that retired teachers get a FULL salary and benefits...even though they're retired. It's kind of sad that they can't fix that. That's a lot of money being dished out to people who aren't working.

It sucks, but there's not much anyone can do about it.

You are so right!! Why on earth would schools teach education subjects? I mean, what do they think they are?

The only reason I go to school is for band.
