I hope this question has a third answer. You see the situation may vary in different cultures. In collective cultures like the Orientals, family should always be the most important; but in a more individualistic culture, people tend to see family as of less importance, and if friends could make them feel more recognized, they might choose friends over family.

That really depends on the situation.

Friends come and go though and family will always be there.

I can only vote for myself because I have a very close and loving family. Unfortunately, many people don't. In their case, it's friends before family.

I have plenty of time to be with my family. Most of my friends live all around the state. I don't hate my family, but I don't see my friends that much.

Depends on the family and friends.

Besides my parents and one uncle, my family isn't even on the same continent. I hardly ever see them. Although I would try to come through if they needed something, just being related to someone doesn't forge bonds.

I disagree on this, because I come from a really drama-filled family, and I view family; or people in general as a "I don't really care about you, if you don't care about me" sort of thing. Family or not, if I'm not treated right I'm not giving you special treatment or my 'automatic love and affection' just because we're related.
