Contrary to popular belief, it is actually ok to admit that you need help for a mental illness, amirite?

that's not contrary to popular belief
I think that the popular belief is that it's acceptable to admit illness

I voted "Diagree" because this isn't contrary to popular belief at all, in fact I've never hear anyone tell someone not to talk about it.

Depending on the mental illness, people could use it against you.
Tell it to a professional, that's what they're for.

I admitted to being suicidal about half a week ago. I got put in the hospital for a day while nearly 5 different people asked me the same questions over and over again, constantly making me guilty with "You have no reason to feel this way" and "your life's not so bad" and "it could be worse, you could be in Africa" an "how dare you do this to your family". Now I'm being forcefully put on medication and as such am not allowed to be alone at school or home or even to leave my house.
Yeah, such a good idea. I'm never admitting it to anyone again. It was the worst choice I've made for myself. I was happier being depressed than I am "healing".
