No, it's the best way to make friends.

Kinda good to get that sort of stuff out of the way. Imagine becoming great friends with them but then you find out they intolerant of your views.

It would be hard to become great friends with someone who was intolerant of your views. Even if you //never// talked about religion or politics, your world views would be revealed in normal conversation -> plus OP didn't say you should not ever talk about them, just not on the __first__ meeting.

I don't talk to my very best friend about either of these. She's dear to me and I value her ability to make her own informed decisions and choices whether I agree with them or not; so, I'd rather let her have different views in some areas while still being friends than potentially sacrifice the friendship for the disagreements.

That very much depends on who you're meeting and of what nature the future of your relationship will be.

My friend just realized I'm an atheist. Now he's trying to convert me. Even people you've known for a while can be hard to talk to with such topics.

or any time.

Unless you are going to a political or religious event, of course. If I volunteer to work on some political candidate's campaign, it's probably ok to tell politics with my fellow campaign workers.
