+343 It's bothersome when people complain about "being depressed" over issues everyone goes through. You don't know what depression is, or what it can actually do, unless you are clinically diagnosed with it, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

like how people say they have insomnia because it takes them 30 minutes to get to sleep

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I have a friend that complains about how much her life sucks because her mom yells at her and she gets herself into a lot of drama.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Same with OCD. I can't stand it when people say "oh my god I am so ocd right now, I erased my last sentence because it was too messy." You don't know how horrible it is to have these conditions unless a doctor tells you you have them.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I know. I had OCD for two years and it was horrible. I counted everything from my steps to the birds in the sky. I hate it when people generalize a disorder that I have struggled with.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm sorry! I don't have ocd but have seen firsthand its effects. It's truly horrible. :(

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah... I was lucky. I got help and since I'm young I bounce back quickly but it didn't help curing it because I have emetophobia (an irrational fear of vomiting). But I am stronger now. I can deal with things like OCD bouts and panic attacks :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's good :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

a fellow emetophobic, finally! but I'm happy everything's better :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

My friend is clinically depressed, I don't think I know what she's going through-but I Think I mIght be able to understand it a little.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You can still feel depressed and not have clinical depression.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It is possible to get depressed and not have clinical depression.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It is possible to know what it's like without having had it, as other people said. Though I do agree that it's annoying when people trivialize serious disorders, "OMG I was sad this morning and now I'm happy, I'm so bipolar!" or "I forgot breakfast, I'm so anorexic!" and all that. I hate those people... -_-

by Anonymous 13 years ago

you can understand what it is without being diagnosed :/

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I was going to say that you don't have to have clinical depression to be depressed, but two smart people beat me to it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Living with real depression is hard...trust me. I get pissed when I hear others talk like they're soooo depressed. No, you're sad. It will pass (for most people, of course there are always exceptions to any statement).

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Dude. I HATE this. You don't have to be told by a doctor (I haven't told my parents to get me tested, but I show every symptom of clinical depression, so I'm pretty sure I'm depressed, and it runs in my family), but it's annoying when people are like, "Oh my god, my boyfriend just dumped me, I'm so depressed even though we only went out for two weeks." It's fucking obnoxious.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I hate when people say they are depressed because things are going wrong in their life. You don't have to have a horrible life to be depressed

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Girl at my school: OHEMGEE I'M DEPRESSED! Me: Why? Her: The guy I had a crush on asked another girl out! Me: ono (few days later) Same girl: OHEMGEE I'M DEPRESSED! Me: Why? Her: I lost my pencil case. ...AGAIN! Me: ono ono ono

by Anonymous 13 years ago

depressed "–adjective 1. sad and gloomy; dejected; downcast." It's an emotion, too.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think the OP is referring to people that are overly dramatic and like to say they are depressed just for attention

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah, like *cough* emo kids *cough*

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah thats what i was referring to... not saying if you dont have it you dont know what it is but its annoying to hear people compllain when they (the over dramatic people) probably dont understand the actual effects of the disease. sorry for any confusion..

by Anonymous 13 years ago

A clinical diagnosis doesn't make it official. What makes it official is if you were to have ACTUAL problems.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

you can know what depression is and what it can do to people even if yor are not clinically diagnosed. i have suffered through a lot of the syptoms of depression, but i have not been clinically diagnosed (i have not told anyone) but i truly do know what depression does to people

by Anonymous 13 years ago

There are too many people in the world today suffering from severe depression, who will never be diagnosed or are waiting to be diagnosed... you need to remember that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I agree that people know what depression is, but it's true that if someone is going around telling everyone that they're depressed then it's likely for attention.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, as others have said, it's possible to be depressed without being clinically depressed but I get what you mean. It's kind of like when people say FML for the most stupid things. "I missed the bus. FML." Yeah, I'm sure your life is totally fucked now; way more than, say, the life of a person who just got diagnosed with malignant cancer. Ugh, people need to stop trying make their lives so melodramatic.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(Your name (optional)): yeah this is what i was trying to get across, not to sound ignorant about depression/being depressed. i hope people get what i'm trying to point out though! :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No kidding. In my group of friends, there's one I know is clinically depressed because of constant bullying and just being ignored. She'd told me. And yet she nevers says a word when my other friends talk about being "depressed" because they just broke up, they're grounded, etc...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

There is a difference between "depression" and "being depressed." Depression is something diagnosable. Being depressed is something that everyone goes through at some poing for whatever reason. Also...the majority of people who suffer from real depression never get help for it. Yeah, it's true that there are some people who take it too far and dramatize everything, but to group EVERYONE who complains about feeling "depressed" into that stereotype is wrong. You never know what someone really goes through, just as someone never knows what you go through.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

definition: a condition of general emotional dejection and withdrawal; sadness greater and more prolonged than that warranted by any objective reason. you definitely don't have to be clinically diagnosed to be depressed. most people have a period in their life where there are seriously depressed without ever seeing a doctor. you're post should more like it's annoying when people over exaggerate small problems and claim to be depressed. but remember something you think is insignificant can be life changing to someone else.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah. I have to agree with everyone who pointed out that "depression" is, in fact, both an emotional state of being and a disease. Some people do tend to abuse the term for over-dramatization, but a good deal of the people mentioned on this comment thread sound a lot like teenagers. I don't know about the rest of you, but most teenagers I know (myself included) have a penchant for drama. So them abusing a term? Yeah, I get that you're annoyed that they're misusing the term for the emotional state, but they're probably not saying that they're clinically depressed. Where did you think that name came from? -.-'' And I sympathize with the depressed people on their issues, so don't get me wrong... but don't act just as ignorant as the people you accuse if you're going to make a point.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah i understand what you're saying :) sorry for any misunderstanding . i was just using it to make a point ... and yeah it's mostly teenagers :p

by Anonymous 13 years ago

my friend said she had mild ocd just because she was bothered by my scattered pencils. ...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I had a friend who screamed about how fucked up her life was just because a girl spread a rumor about her, The same girl spread multiple rumors about me and turned friends on me, but I never said anything like that and didn't scream when I was suspended because of her. It really annoyed me that she thinks she has a bad life over such a simple iffie- I have lots of family problems and everything, but I still don't think I have a bad life.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

right ! like... i understand people have problems and we don't know everything that goes on, but when you see someone complaining about the stupidest things when you know other people (maybe not just you) have worse, but you don't want to say anything because you don't want to be rude :o

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't have a bad life. I live at home, with my parents, who are not abusive and who care about me a lot. I made good grades in high school and we have just moved to a beautiful new house in the same city we were in before. But I am so depressed, and I don't understand it. For months, maybe longer than a year now, my heart always feels so heavy. It's affected the way I socialize, meaning basically that I don't anymore. I'm overweight because I overeat (which I'm not sure if it's a symptom of my depression or a cause), so I avoid doing things in public that don't even have anything to do with my weight. I have basically failed my way out of college -which my parents don't know- because I am no longer interested in my passion; graphic design. Lately, it's been getting worse. I can't bring myself to sleep before 4 a.m. I feel like I am just waiting to die. Little, trivial things could have influenced it, relationship and my mother's alocohol probs, but how i feel doesn't make any sense.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

A girl at my school tried to pretend she had a fear of vomiting (like me). I know what it's really like and I asked her about it. She's obviously faking it. Everybody believed her about it and felt bad for her -__- I don't see why anybody would lie about it. I guess she wants attention.
