Actually cockroaches keep things clean by eating whatever scraps are lying around. Which actually prevents other pests from showing up. They also clean themselves constantly like cats do and as a result are terribly at spreading germs. But yes, I agree, it's gross and I'd freak out if I saw one too. The rational part of me checks out when I see a bug.
