While this is true for a majority of Idol winners, David Cook won American Idol and his song "Permanent" is far from cheesy. The lyrics are about his brother who suffered and died from cancer. In fact, most of Cook's album, aside from "Time of My Life," is pleasantly missing the typically cheesy fluff they produce.

That's partly true, I suppose. I think it's just difficult in general to find an artist who has meaningful lyrics and can actually sing.

May I suggest Carrie Underwood? She's very good and has some strong songs, such as Jesus Take the Wheel.
