by Anonymous 13 years ago

But imagine if you had started in 2nd grade

by Anonymous 13 years ago

interesting thought. I wish where i lived were like places in Asia where they start in Kindergarten

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i started 1st grade... its not like i remember anything from then though

I actually had it in 6-8th grade every other day. I learned nothing. The first two years we had a teacher who did nothing. We played a lot of bingo and twards the end she just started writing answers on the board.

I think if we study it a little bit a day every year, even if it's only a few minutes a day, it would help a lot.

I've had Spanish since I was in kindergarten, and I'm nowhere near fluent. :(

They teach our second language, which is English, along with our native language, which is Arabic, starting from kindergarten. That way it's almost effortless, and our second language comes easy to us. It's like second nature to me. Seriously, I don't even consider myself bilingual.

Yeah, almost all non-English countries teach English from kindergarten. I bet they don't teach a second language in English countries because they don't know which to teach -- English IS after all, the universal language -- so they wait until the student is old enough to decide for themself.

Well in Ireland they teach Irish from the start, and (I think) in England they teach French from the start.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

well actually, Canada has two official languages, english and french. so we HAVE to learn both and i think we start in grade 1.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

We can't take a language until 9th grade. You don't even have to, it's an elective.

at my school, we start learning chinese in 1st grade

In Egypt, it differs. In public schools, they start English in second or third grade. But a lot of people start English at kindergarten, then take a third language from second, third, or fourth grade (depends on the school). So now, I'm fluent in both Arabic and English, and not so bad in French.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I started in grade one. I think most people in my area started in at least grade four. I can't imagine not starting that early!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I started French in grade 3 or 4, one of them

by Anonymous 13 years ago

In Canada it's required to take French throughout elementary school. Although I'm pretty schools start at grade 4 now, but when I was in school we started in grade 1

by Anonymous 13 years ago

In primary school I actually chose to have french lessons, as well as the lessons we already had in school, and I barely remember anything. They must have a better method in other countries.

At my school we started in first grade.

Where I live, there's this new "dual language problem", which starts with kindergarten and goes through 5th grade. The first 3 years, writing, and science are in Spanish, while reading and math are in English (Or something like that). After 3rd grade, it switches. So by the time the kids in the program are out of elementary school, they are bilingual. I wish they had had that when I was in elementary.

We start our optional language in the first year of secondary school. It's not too bad.
