+34 Therapy for Children, amirite?

Mental illness isn't always caused by parents. There are so many other factors, with biology and genes being the most important.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I'm not saying it's caused by them. I'm saying they just don't want to deal with it. And that's probably from a disconnect from their child at an early age that just got worse with every year. That's why family>job is important

So as a parent, they should know how to treat mental illness, like ADHD or depression?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

nah, but maybe they could've googled it instead of watching another episode of the kardashians. just sayin'.

You're making a lot of assumptions

by Anonymous 1 month ago

yes. No one should know your child better than you. Educate yourself and implement what will work best with your child.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Ok so the same thing is true for physical problems right? Your kid has a broken foot? Just educate yourself your should know how to treat it right? Professionals exist for a reason. You wont becone a psychologist by reading random articles on the internet.

Exactly. Hopefully they don't become parents.

Okay

The earlier someone with mental issues gets help, the better. Parents aren't always qualified to give it

by Anonymous 1 month ago

What mental issues would unqualify parents to handle?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

A lot of things, I mean if u want meds for your kids mental issues, u will need a professional to evaluate them, u cant just say my kid has ADHD, and then expect them to write out meds, thats not how it works, at least not where im from. So anything where u need/want support from the government, u will need a pro.

I think a parent is capable of ADHD. But that will only work if you have a great understanding of your child. Like your best friends or that saying "no one knows you better than me." If you can't communicate with your child then for sure cannot help them. And most definitely not a true believer of meds.

As one who has ADHD, I can tell u meds do help, but ADHD was just an example, u can replace it with any mental issue. Point still being, u should not diagnose someone, if u dont have the knowledge to do so, its an profession for a reason. There is a difference in helping and understanding your child, and diagnosing them.

I don't think meds are the answer anyways

Weird take. I had extremely early onset depression and was suicidal by age 8. I was not traumatized or abused besides getting bullied at school; I basically came out this way. My parents did everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) they could, but I would not be here without mental health professionals.

I would want to ask a lot of personal questions to try get my point across but I honestly don't think this is the place for that. I'm happy it worked for you.

I would say the vast majority of parents are not qualified to deal with mental illness or try to lessen, solve or prescribe medications for them.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I agree but I don't think that doesn't make them capable of fixing, lessening or even embracing their problem. I would argue more that majority of parents don't have the time to deal with whatever issue is going on with their children. And yes I am trying to refrain from calling it mental illness. These kids are not sick in the mind. they're just different and unique.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Actually I would say it means exactly that if anything parents trying to fix something they have no idea how it works may only make the situation worse. There should be no issues with using the word "mental illness" it's a completely fine term. Some kids have tougher childhoods and some just are prone to things like anxiety. This being said parents that learn and take an interest and try to fix their kids should be encouraged, but it should be done correctly preferably with the supervision of a professional.

Anxiety should not be labeled as mental illness. That label is the basis to a losing battle. A child is now a making excuse for themself that it's okay for so and so because I have a mental illness. Those 2 words are not positive to a child's mental development. It's making a problem bigger than it is. I think it just boils down to parents staying consistent. Working on that problem with them. Being there for them. Loving them unconditionally and most importantly listening. I just believe that in most cases: a loving, happy home can deter these "mental illnesses" in it's own imperfect, unexplainable kind of way.

Just general anxiety is not I should have been more clear "anxiety disorders" are mental illness. There is nothing wrong with that like I said above the word mental illness is completely fine. Now making excuses because you have a mental illness is often looked down on. Many people have mental illness but don't let it make them do bad things, accidents do happen still. It doesn't necessarily make the problem bigger but addressing it wrong can make the issue worse indeed. I'll use myself as an example I guess, I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression back in 2013ish when I was still in high school. I come from a very loving family (hell I still live with parents they are by far the best people in the world). I would also consider myself not "an adult" when diagnosed and it did negatively impact me for a little bit, but I learned to grow and accept that I'm not perfect and that there is clear levels to mental illness. A decade later I'm thriving and have much more confidence than the average person and believe in myself much more.

by Rude-Shock7996 1 month ago

I know I did not flat out say it but there's enough context in there for you to figure that out for yourself.

by Anonymous 1 month ago
