Jewelry has existed for over 135,000 Years. Yes it can be for showing off social status, but there's other reasons people wear it. Functionality, social status (think wedding rings), personal meaning you can wear a necklace some one gave you every day everywhere you go. Not so much for something else. Decorations and expressions people love to dress themselves up and express themselves jewelry helps do that. Religious reasons. Also jewelry, like good jewelry can be and investment.

Why own a painting? Why wear clothes that aren't cheap pieces of synthetic fabric? Why spend money on shampoo and conditioner when you could just shave your head every other week?
