My niece was 8 years old and obsessed with starbucks mugs because of a tiktok trend and her mother would even buy her some. She had never even been to a starbucks she doesn't drink coffee, she was just fed advertisements in the form of "viral trends". Among other things, she's now 11 and completely addicted to her phone because of social media. poor parenting.

Yes, I do agree but I can't really say that about my sister, as she's a single mum and I am not a parent so I can't really "judge", but if I had children I can't imagine a world where I'd let this happen. I'd sooner have piano or violin tutors coming round to teach my child unique skills than let them potato out on the sofa with an ipad.

Ill give you an unpopular one. The fact that she is a single mom is a big contributor and no excuse

by Ok_Challenge_2932 1 year ago

But you can say it and you should say it. Being a single mother isn't an excuse for such poor parenting choices, especially when this means allowing young children to be babysat by technology. Social media at 8yo is nothing other than neglectful, sh*tty parenting. All this means is that the neurological development of your neice has been affected by her mother's inability to understand and implement creative and intelligent solutions. Money and private lessons aren't required to give your children happy, fulfilling, creative, intellectual life experiences. Go ahead and project what she's going to be like once she hits puberty.

This take is so cold that scientists are investigating whether it can be used to re-freeze the polar ice caps.

Adults behave far worse on social media than kids.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Potentially, sure. But it's not just about their behaviour on social media, it's about the childs own mental development. Social media is an addiction that causes depression, it mass manipulates people under the guise of advertisements and trends. It's the polar opposite of private.

I dunno, I think I wouldn't have known as much about different things and life in general if I didn't have social media growing up.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You would have. I am not that old, I am still considered Gen Z, on the older side, but 90% of what I learned through the Internet I didn't learn from social media.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

That depends on what definition of social media you're using, but yeah, but also social media teachers you about culture and common knowledge I wouldn't have known

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I couldn't agree more.

It'd be quite depressing when the internet went adults only and was just as bad as when there were kids on it.

I don't mind them just being silent and not chatting with adults on social media, but when they troll adults around their late twenties to thirties or older by invalidating their personal experiences or joke about them in malicious ways, it really hurts for those adults who believe you're also adults who are insulting them. Adults take hurtful words into heart because they're tired of life at the moment and are struggling to keep their lives together. People who don't know that insensitive trolls are teens or early 20s do get incredibly hurt by their words, and their actions will bear consequences.

This take is so cold it caused another Ice Age

Children born in very conservative families need social media to educate themselves and maybe get help when their families are abusing them.
