When I see an opinion like this I just assume the person either 1) doesn't play games or 2) mostly plays things like COD or similar games.

I'd agree.

Despite no actual science to back this up.

Do you have any actual science to back this up? Or are you just biased for no reason? Video games have wildly increased my imagination. I play a load of minecraft and constantly come up with amazing and cool ideas to make bases or landscapes.

Why are you comparing a visual medium with a text-based medium? Of course one is going to be more detrimental to imagination, its basically sensory deprivation compared to something on a screen.

Minecraft is the incarnation of using your imagination.... Where else can i simulate the process of nuclear fission to a large scale and semi realistic degree in the first person sort of level and at the same time build myself a home, worry about the nutrient levels of my crops, understand the chemical processes needed for ore refinement, learning about fractional distillation the list goes on the kinds of things that game alone can emulate.

Ignorant opinion is ignorant.

Writing is an ineffective way of communicating knowledge and story telling, since the words are unable to defend themselves when miss interpreted or wrongfully attacked. Literature is eroding your capability to think, face-to-face communication is the only way to tell stories or educate someone.

They help inspire some aspects of it as well. I know a couple who writes and illustrates books and almost exclusively uses the inspiration of popular video games to write the stories they sell to live off of. Just because you don't have to imagine the visual aspect, doesn't mean that it destroys all facets of your imagination.

A book is way less creative because the story is already there, all you have to do is imagine it in your head. How does that require any amount of exercise? Video games force you to solve problems in creative ways, they are immensely more "creative" than just sitting there reading words by yourself. Plus, many games have the advantage of co-op so not only do you have to solve puzzles, utilize your reflexes, and master mechanics, you also have to do that with others. No comparison, video games are 1000x better for your imagination than books. Checkmate nerd.

I love books but at the same time words on paper is also a lot more boring for most people opposed to a video game.

My immediate response is no, because sandbox games exist, but even ignoring that, you're still wrong. What about the people who play a game, enjoy it and then go on to make fan art or write fan fic? What about the people who play a game and that gets them into game development where they're suddenly developing their own game? Just because the image that the media is trying to convey is through a tangible picture and not a verbal description doesn't diminish the imagination that it can spark within someone.

Well, this is an unpopular opinion, I suppose. It's a dumb opinion, and imagination to seems to only be the visuals you can paint in your head, but it's probably unpopular.

Minecraft and terraria: Am I a joke to you?

I've been playing video games since I was 5 and I'm 36. This is 1000% not true, at least for me and all my friends who also play. I can't even count the times I had to think hard and imagine how a puzzle is supposed to be completed, or how to deal with a boss/trouble area. I would say it supplements, not destroys. Not only that, they help in the development of reading, problem-solving skills, and reaction time.
