-15 There being an afterlife is scarier than there being no afterlife. amirite?

by Lwillms 1 week ago

Your only looking at the idea of an afterlife though a Christian point of view. Christians are not the only religion that believes in an existence after death.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

And better not to read 'Tibetan book of dead', and other similar ancient scripts

by No-Tumbleweed8230 1 week ago

This isn't even a Christian point of view. His idea of heaven is completely wrong

by Agile-Promise 1 week ago

true and not all christian believe what the afterlife is even like. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the afterlife will be a lot like life is now. There will still be some ups and downs but making progress to become more like Jesus Christ. There will still be goals and aspirations and sometimes failure will happen

by Anonymous 1 week ago

So... THIS is the afterlife then?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints LMFAO

by Anonymous 1 week ago

so the joke is just that you're disrespecting someone's religion?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Do you know the whole Mormon story? Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, The Book of Mormon, etc? It's monumentally silly, and deserving of disrespect.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

so is 'regular' Christianity.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I know that South Park did an episode on Mormonism and it's been a punching bag for normies ever since. I just think it's "monumentally" arrogant to insult someone's religion just because you are Godless yourself

by Anonymous 1 week ago

So, you don't know anything about Mormonism, but your theistic tendency is to talk down on anyone who insults any form of established theism. It's literally based around a kid from Vermont finding magical tablets in the 1800's. Come on. We don't have to respect all beliefs. We really don't.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

What movie is this (jk), what a wild story almost like scientology

by Affectionate_One5204 1 week ago

Dont forget the part where black people are black due to the curse of ham, and that Joseph Smith stance on slavery wavered as being pro slavery while in Missouri and against it after being run out of the south. Clearly a man of conviction.

by WorkerThin 1 week ago

The joke is that ALL religions are stupid but mormon is especially so

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Dude. Im a hardcore atheist but there's a way to pass your belief to others. It's better if you act better than those religious, by being humble with your belief. I hate religious people who go out of their way to preach and try to convince others that they are right. But also, no one likes an asshole atheist who thinks he is better than everyone else. You aren't better than those religious zealots. Shame on you man. :/

by Whitney73 1 week ago

I suppose that means you think you're pretty smart, huh?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Forgive my ignorance I don't know about the LDS's views on heaven. Can you die in the afterlife that is like life now, what's the difference between this life and the next?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Mormons aren't Christian. sorry.

by kristopher69 1 week ago

Yup. This. Our afterlife will be basically the same struggle we currently have and any progress beyond that relates to some dude from history and how people said he lived 2000 years ago. All checks out. Let's get together at least once a week and talk about this rational situation.

by No_Preparation_4125 1 week ago

He's not even looking at it right. Christians *don't* believe in a paradise where there is no difficulty. Rather a place where every problem can be solved.

by kristopher69 1 week ago

Christianity may not be the only religion that believes in life after death, but the only way to Salvation is through Jesus Christ.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

How are you so sure? Would you be a Christian if you were born in India?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If I heard the Gospel, yes I'm sure I would. If not, I wouldn't be me.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

delusion

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Damn dude you're really sipping that tea hard 🤡

by Anonymous 1 week ago

am i supposed to know what that means?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Believe it or not, there are Christians in India. India is 2.3% Christian, which on the surface may not seem like a lot. But when you take into consideration that India has nearly 1.5 billion people, that amounts to about 3.5 million Christians. So yes, if I was born in India with my same spirit and personality, I would absolutely still be Christian. No amount of cursing or impotent rage on your part will change that.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Unfortunately, common sense and logical arguments won't change your mind too. :/

by Whitney73 1 week ago

This is the most myopic, self absorbed take while claiming to believe in Christ, a person who preached selflessness and charity and understanding of others. If it's a troll, not bad. If it isn't, your life sucks. Guaranteed.

by No_Preparation_4125 1 week ago

Christ quite literally said "no one cometh unto the Father but through me".

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yeah no. Circular logic and circular argument aren't something people with critical thinking do. My question to you would be, why would anyone care what the Bible says? Serious question.

by Whitney73 1 week ago

You're not truly interested in learning about it, so why would I waste my time entertaining a disingenuous question? Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. Matthew 7:6, KJV

by Anonymous 1 week ago

And?

by nolanrubye 1 week ago

Your proof of a made up sky daddy…is a quote from the book of made up sky daddy. Solid.

by No_Preparation_4125 1 week ago

"No, I'm not a Christian, and I have nothing but contempt for your backward religious beliefs. So yeah, this argument wouldn't work on me but maybe if I use it on you, you'll do what I want." Very sneaky rhetoric

by Anonymous 1 week ago

i don't necessarily doubt that, but all i have to go off of is the inspired Word of God

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Amen. Keep preaching, sibling in Christ.

by kristopher69 1 week ago

You're assuming you'd carry your current level of human consciousness with you into eternity. For a human (at least as most of us know what it is to be human), it's not possible to experience joy without sorrow. I can't say whether that's true or not for all levels of consciousness. Side note: if you're interested in a sci-fi take on eternal life and getting everything you want through AI and trans humanism, and how this would likely be completely unfulfilling, check out the novella The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect.

by Collierkarlee 1 week ago

I mean it depends. If it's a higher being with you there then they can probably alter how your brain experiences reality and make you be happy forever or something

by Sydnie05 1 week ago

But then it is essentially a false reality. Maybe once I was there I would enjoy it, but from my current perspective I'd rather just die. If I would just go on for all eternity, it makes me feel like this life is insignificant. I don't understand how the concept of being happy forever is appealing or comforting. To me it is just depressing.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Well, if you're happy you're not depressed, so there's that.

by Sea_Dragonfruit 1 week ago

A forever happy reality sounds nice imo, even if it is false i probably wouldnt want to get out of it

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I was motivated in understanding how the world works empirically as a human. In the afterlife, I would be interested in understanding how the afterlife works empirically, how would you keep someone like that entertained?

by Beginning-Day 1 week ago

You're assuming that the afterlife you're picturing just happens to be the one pictured in the religious texts. There's a darn good chance that the actual afterlife is nothing but ritual combat against aliens in their afterlife... like Doom! where you keep respawning.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I am looking forward to my nothingness, personally

by Born-Beautiful-9337 1 week ago

Same.

by Material-Temporary48 1 week ago

Being reunited with my loved ones again and not having to worry about bills or my daily stresses sounds great. Do I think that's actually the case? Probably not

by Ok-Palpitation-1099 1 week ago

Imagine a cosmic entity torturing you for eternity just because you didn't worship him

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Personally, I believe in reincarnation, which in retrospect sounds worse than just spending eternity in some form of heaven.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If you're open to the Christian view of the afterlife I would suggest watching and researching what heaven is like, specifically watching others' near death experiences. I like to think that our brains have a hard time processing anything infinite. It is a limit to our finite minds and if heaven is real then there is a stretching of our minds that goes beyond the finite and into the infinite which I imagine would be far from boring.

by New_General_4674 1 week ago

I'm someone who believes there is something that comes after. I don't know what that may be, but I'm not afraid of I don't think you should be too if it actually is a possibility.

by General-Barnacle 1 week ago

that's equivalent to turning down a free trip to india because you've already tried indian food at home. every concept of the afterlife necessarily has to be oversimplified because an actual experience can never be conveyed in words. My theory is that most people will get to heaven and realize 1: heaven isn't defined by their imagination, and 2: we will all have to work there, no 1000 year vacation.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You mean to tell me they can't give me a measly 1000 year vacation when I'm gonna be there for eternity? Sheesh, the hits just keep coming!

by Sea_Dragonfruit 1 week ago

you expect free rent for the whole eternity? there's no commies in heaven bro!

by Anonymous 1 week ago

So you're okay being entirely pointless? I'm not. If life doesn't continue then this tease of a blip of an existence had no purpose. Btw the sorrow people feel is largely just biochemical. Who says we even would have the capacity for anhedonia?

by Own-Mix-5018 1 week ago

Not trying to argue, just giving a different view point :) Life being temporary is why it is so meaningful and full of purpose. This is it, the whole point, your whole purpose is right now. And that purpose is what you decide it is. For me, it's to experience what I can. All the ups and downs and views and feelings. I don't care if my existence is "pointless" to the rest of the universe. My existence is the entire universe to me.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

There's a pretty good chance that our lives are pointless though. There's nothing really wrong with that. We were still given a chance to experience human existence even if it was short

by Ok-Palpitation-1099 1 week ago

So you think the feeling of anhedonia is biological but bliss isn't? Why?

by Beginning-Day 1 week ago

This outlook only works when you cling to your Earthly point of view. If you're talking about the Christian afterlife for example, the belief is that all of the things you're talking about - sadness, sorrow, suffering, it's all swept away and simply doesn't exist anymore. If you've ever seen the film The Invention of Lying you might be able to understand as the characters in the film inhabit a universe where there is no such thing as a lie. Nobody has ever been able to say something that isn't true. They don't have fiction. They don't exaggerate. Each and every single person is 100% incapable of concocting a story or uttering a single syllable that isn't pure truth. To deeply believing Christians, that's Heaven - it's a place where the things you're talking about are completely absent - people cannot even conceive of boredom or loneliness because they're so wholly filled with joy and love that their consciousness simply cannot fathom those ideas. Now that isn't to say that such a place would sound like paradise to everyone, but that's the idea, so in the truest sense your question is essentially nonsensical.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It wouldnt sound like paradise, but it in actuality would be fined tuned to the individual quality of each person. Its a natural paradise, that emphasizes an authentic way of being. The only people that probably couldn't like it there are those that'd be weighed down by their own self conscious guilt.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I totally agree! I think about this all the time--I don't understand how the concept of eternity, especially perfect eternity, is appealing or comforting to anybody.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Then maybe how you think of the afterlife isn't accurate to how it actually is? How could any of us possibly conceive the idea of an afterlife with God if we haven't experienced it?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I guess it would depend on the afterlife. The passage of time is relative, and boredom is an effect of the ego (sense of self) experiencing the physical body's constant and unending need for upkeep. Remove the body, the ego and the sense of time passing, and I could see some versions of the afterlife being incredibly desirable.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't know how to put this into words other than I think that the afterlife would/will be something much more profound and greater than you or I can comprehend. I'm still young so I don't know how I'll react when faced with my own mortality, but I've come to terms with the finite life we have and do believe there is infinitely more to life and us

by Middle_Opportunity 1 week ago

You're assuming that in the afterlife you'd have a brain and body thats capable of getting bored. Generally, most religious people see it as freedom from anxiety, pursuing goals, etc. Lets assume it is basically just our current minds and bodies in an eternal life... I don't think we'd get as bored as you think. The older I get as a human the less bored I am. Being a kid was a lot of waiting for things to happen. As an adult its like a constant sprint all of the time. I suspect if we had similar reasons to stay busy in an afterlife we'd be in a similar boat.

by jbernier 1 week ago

You think that heaven is purely doing whatever you want with no problems? It isn't. Heaven is a place where "every tear will be wiped away", not where there are no problems. Rather it is a place where every problem has a solution. The secular idea of heaven is...boring, I'll agree. But people think "paradise" and think of a land without struggle, without work. NO! Humanity was designed to have dominion over the Earth and Sea, and to tend to it. AKA, to work. Life without work is ultimately meaningless. And I don't mean 9-5 office job work. But work is many things. Much work is enjoyable. Some is not.

Reminds me of that Twilight Zone episode A Nice Place to Visit

by kundetommie 1 week ago

Don't worry about it. At some point you realized you were here.... probably still in your mamas belly. Then.... she pushed you out and now you're here. You don't remember what the hell happened before. You don't even know the exact second you fall asleep! You're just in the dream world at a certain point. So! Hopefully without too much uncomfortable feelings or pain you'll realize oh snap! I left my body! Now I am........ fill in the damn blank.

by Long_Island9620 1 week ago

We forgot a lot to purposefully become human and experience heaven for the hell of it, the devils just god in a ski mask, what if when you die your really waking up and what if this life is a dream and you made it up?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

We won't know what heaven is like. I am sure it won't be boring.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You sure know a lot about the afterlife.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Many philosophical and religious discussions revolve around the concept of an afterlife and what it might entail. Some people find the idea of eternal bliss and peace comforting, while others, like yourself, may see it as potentially monotonous or lacking the challenges and experiences that give life meaning. Human psychology often craves purpose, growth, and challenges to feel fulfilled. The idea of an afterlife without those elements may not resonate with everyone. The concept of the afterlife in the Abrahamic religion (i.e. Islam, Christianity, & Judaism) serves as a motivating factor for us to lead righteous lives, fulfill our religious obligations, and seek closeness to God in hopes of attaining paradise in the Hereafter.

by Available_Shopping62 1 week ago

I really need to know why when people talk about the afterlife or there being a god or gods etc they always wanna assume its the (very very limited) christian definitions

by Anonymous 1 week ago

For the sake of this conversation, let's say that the Christian heaven does exist. If we're going to believe scripture, we then have to assume that there are multiple planes of existence and therefore multiple dimensions of consciousness. It'd be impossible for a mortal to fathom what a limitless being is capable of feeling. Plus, isn't the point of heaven that the "eternal bliss" is never-ending? Bliss is bliss… by definition it's only good. Boredom would be impossible under those terms, as you would feel euphoria literally at all times. Forever.

by Electronic_Ruin_2091 1 week ago

Being with God in Heaven will not be like anything one can experience here on earth. The reason things become mundane over time on earth is because they're exactly that - mundane (from latin mundus meaning world). Bliss may not be an appropriate word - it seems to me more like an everlasting serenity of being reunited with your Creator.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Are there any theories as to what it would be like?

by Lwillms 1 week ago

Would an ant be able to theorize the habitat of the moon? It's possible that the same thing applies to a human and Heaven.

by ahane 1 week ago

There are many theories, but the only accounts that matter are the ones given in the Bible. If you're curious I can share a few, but I don't want to be the guy that just spams zero context Scripture lol.

by jonesalbert 1 week ago

by Honest_Ambassador981 1 week ago

If there's an afterlife, that's what I want. I want to be curious forever. Curiosity is ultimately what I find fun. I have a hard time imagining a world where I'm not able to question things.

by Beginning-Day 1 week ago

You haven't even tried out your afterlife yet and you're already hating on it? Lol

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I am not sure it would be stale. To me afterlife is like coming home from grade school. When you die, you complete one grade and you get home briefly (to feel comfort and maybe to do some homework). Then you go to a higher grade of evolution or maybe repeat the previous grade….and the process continues until we reach something perhaps.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

A human who knows sorrow and pain does not empathize with a potential afterlife that grants none of it. I don't believe in an afterlife either, but imagining ETERNAL pleasure, pleasure of a kind no one on earth can comprehend, is admittedly definitionally incomprehensible but I would argue warrants the attractiveness. Absence of afterlife gives you a null set of feeling in nothingness also for eternity. Why not want the one that gives an eternal good feeling with no drawbacks? Again, I don't believe in an afterlife, and this idea of heaven isn't agreed upon by everyone who believes in one, but as I used to believe in one this was very compelling to me. You have to "lean not on your own understanding", as it were.

by Hagenesjeromy 1 week ago

Except you arnt confined to the human brain in the afterlife so menial eh it like boredom might be canceled out who knows

by delphaspencer 1 week ago

I'm pretty sure one of the constituents of an afterlife is basically altered thinking and brain chemistry to truly be eternally happy. And to my knowledge, heaven in islam has it so you get what you wish for even sorrow and pain.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I wonder would it work if you just ask god for purpose when you're in heaven? Or just ask god for earth simulation so you could actually work on something while staying in heaven.

by Maximilian13 1 week ago

Afterlife would get stale? Have you been there? Please tell me what gets stale. What was it like? What were your emotions? Could you feel pain?

IF there is anything (I don't believe there is), the fact that this experience wouldn't rely on our physical body would make it so different that it couldn't be compared anyway.
