As someone who had a pretty big glow up, I'm bitter that only now I get immediate respect from people. It really exposed the unconscious bias toward people with better looks

Looks get you in the door BUT - Personality makes them stay. VERY wise observation here. Everyone shold read this five times.

If looks didn't matter, women would not be caking makeup on their faces or starving themselves thin. They count.

I think it's more about presenting effort: grooming, style, and accessories goes a long way even for some conventionally unattractive people

Looks matter, people who tell you otherwise are lying. It's a lazy attempt at removing accountability & responsibility, which isn't working.

This is not really an unpopular opinion, everybody knows looks matter.

Popular opinion. Don't think a small amount of amount with a controversial opinion is the popular opinion.

This completely ignores the fact that we wear clothes because it protects us from the elements and that nowhere would suddenly be a nude colony everywhere just because people could not wear clothes. They have a very useful function well beyond appearance That being said of course looks matter, how you appear in the world greatly influences the way you're able to operate in it. Just because you choose an outfit with an awareness of how it will impact you, doesn't mean you're dressing for other people
