+24 Backing into a parking spot is superior to pulling in front first. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Backing into park shows dominance amongst the parking lot denizens.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Bonus points if you're a stick driver. You will all listen to me struggle

by ManufacturerWeak8931 1 week ago

Bro, don't remind me ;_; I drive a rotary so I need to let the clutch come repeatedly with 2k-3k RPM. My poor clutch.

by Bettyfeeney 1 week ago

No it shows stupidity. What if you went grocery shopping? How you gonna load your groceries into your trunk if you backed your car up?

by gardner66 1 week ago

Lmaooo. Imagining a smug guy walking back to his nicely backed up car only to find it inches away from another trunk

by Anonymous 1 week ago

U can leave space behind, but for me, I just put my groceries on the passenger side, as i often only got 1 or maybe 2 bags, and its easier to get them from there afterwards.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Oh that's easy, by not loading my groceries in the middle of the lane like I would be if I hadn't backed my car up.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

lol are you being facetious rn?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

In that specific situation you shouldn't back in. In every other situation you should

by Striking_Earth 1 week ago

what cars are you all buying? I can see an issue with minivan, but with any regular car you should be able to open trunk no problem even if there is car behind you

by No_Pattern6831 1 week ago

I am always backing up for the last 15 years and you really got me thinking why I haven't ever had a problem with this. It's most likely because trunk can be opened even if you are few centimeters away from car behind you

by No_Pattern6831 1 week ago

Not at a grocery store though

by IndependenceNew 1 week ago

This is popular enough to me. I always back in cause it feels like a crap shoot backing out blindly

by lizziehintz 1 week ago

Yup. I drive a pickup, so the turning radius in a parking lot is ass. There are a lot of spots I can't pull into forward.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I think this is common. It's been a rule for all company vehicles at 3 of the companies I've worked for. Backing out of a parking spot carries more risks than pulling out.

by Nearby-Shelter 1 week ago

Apparently so...In a world where so many people drive these large vehicles, it's actually a bit concerning. But, hey, we're the safety minded generation!

by Nearby-Shelter 1 week ago

People rarely get into accidents backing into spaces. It's the people who back out of spades that hit other cars and pedestrians. Backing in is just exponentially safer for everyone.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Its mandatory to back up to park in many countries... yours is a bit an exception where people park front first

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I think that it just seems harder to do...speaking as someone who used to think it was hard to do

by Schustercarleto 1 week ago

I feel like with backup cameras it loses that overall saftey factor and in my car I can see well enough. For trucks its absolutely better

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Ever heard of back up cameras and sensors?

by gardner66 1 week ago

For people with tiny tiny chides. Enjoy never pleasing a woman.

by jamir30 1 week ago

Nah drive forward through one bay and into the next so you can just drive straight out is the quickest way

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Pull through bonus ftw!

by PomegranateFar2789 1 week ago

Especially if you're leaving a concert or sporting event.

by haagcasimir 1 week ago

I'm not sure I'd say backing in is faster. I've been often backing my car in lately, but I feel like it takes me more time to ensure I'm parked straight. Also, when someone backs in, other people potentially have to wait longer for that person to back in due to it taking longer.

by Hour-Vermicelli-9778 1 week ago

If you go front in, people will still have to wait for you when you back out. Either way people still wait for you, so it's a moot point.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Why is nobody paying attention that is said back in and pull out rather than pulling in and backing out? Unless you never leave.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If you pull in, you have to back out. Talk about having to wait for people is the exact same except now you are doing it more slowly because you can't see what's around you as well l.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

People wait for you either way. So your point doesn't really hold any water, logically.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Me personally I think we should have double sided cars

by heidenreichfeli 1 week ago

I started pulling in for one reason. Other trucks/SUVs are obnoxiously large. The hood on these behemoths are as tall as the roof of my Mazda 3. Backing out with the camera gives wide FOV I can see around these things.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Backing in is stupid if you need to load the back of your vehicle. I see people back in at ski resorts and I wonder wtf they are thinking.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

yea i dont back in at grocery store either cuz then its awkward with the cart loading your trunk

by Long_Judgment 1 week ago

Meh, it's not that big of a deal. Pull my cart to the back of the car. Load it the same way you do if you pull in.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You can't fit a cart between two parked a lot do the time

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Great. That's ONE TIME. How about when you are working, going to the bank, picking kids up from school or sports, into your own driveway, at the park (theme, nature, water), at a restaurant?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Going golfing too I have everything in my trunk and it's easier for golf carts to just grab things from behind

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I've lived in places where it's actually illegal to back in. Usually because the plate is in back.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I always back in and never had this issue. You just pull your skis upwards and back, if you are tight on space. With groceries, it's non issue. You just take your bags into your hands, go to back of your car and put it in. Might be a problem if you are wheelchair user or extremely weak/overweight

by No_Pattern6831 1 week ago

I pull through as often as I can.

by kuhicjovany 1 week ago

How about pulling in then pulling in again?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

pull-in game strong

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Better turn radius backing in

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Not unpopular, sometimes it's just easier to pull in.

by AdAcrobatic1626 1 week ago

It's just so much easier leaving

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I used to shake my head disapprovingly at people that did this. But now I've joined them. I think honestly it just took getting an Odyssey that had a good backup and parking cam in it. I was never very good at backing up cars that didn't have them.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

parking cam is godsend. Like getting aligned is no problem, but to be able to precisely back up to an inch is awesome

by No_Pattern6831 1 week ago

For some reason, I find it easier to back in. Not complaining, since it makes pulling out of a small and busy lot so much easier and safer.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's actually safer to back into a parking spot

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Only people who disagree with this suck at parking. I'm also sick and tired of the argument that reversing in wastes time. If you pull in, you have to reverse out. And if you are reversing out, rather than in, your FOV is worse, so you go slower.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

y'all know that you're not impressing anyone doing this 🤷‍♂️

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You sound like you are insecure about your driving abilities.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Not trying to. If you can't back into a space you shouldn't be driving. In my country you won't pass your test if you can't. Why would it be impressive when it's so easy?

by Legitimate-Help4182 1 week ago

Safety and common sense is rarely intended to be impressive.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Wut

by Wrice 1 week ago

I only back in. with back up camera its even easier

by Long_Judgment 1 week ago

Backing in has become the majority in one of my schools parking lot

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Can you explain why you think it's faster and safer?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's faster COMBINED backing in/pulling out than COMBINED pulling in and backing out. The pulling forward is a wash but it's faster to back in than back out. You aren't aware of what's going on when you back out and have to keep stalling whenever someone comes up the aisle. Whereas when you back in you are much more in control and have the priority.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

it's safer because you see cars when getting out of the space. It's faster because once you get used to it, you always park perfectly straight on the first time, no need to re-align yourself, or piss someone by parking diagonally. That's because your axis you are rotating against are your back wheels, so if you align them first, you just straighten up and go, while if you go forward first, you might not have enough space to swivel your front, so back stays off center

by No_Pattern6831 1 week ago

Always back in

by Anonymous 1 week ago

And then you have to hump your shopping to the back of the car between your car and the one next to you potentially scratching paint on the way. Well done.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Great, that's ONE time you park. Forget about work, picking kids up from school or sports, going to the gym or parks, just running small errands where you may have a bag or two, going to a sport event or party or wedding or the dozens or more times you park.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Personally "when you're most vulnerable (moving in reverse)" I'd rather be moving into a larger space than shoe-horning myself backwards between two other cars.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'd rather back in where everything behind me or to my sides are stationary than backing out where things can jump out and surprise me that I can't see.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I agree just make sure you are pulling out slowly cause you don't have any light indications you are moving out of the space Only exceptions are parking spots that have one ways and have tilted parking spots for a reason

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I live in Japan and everyone here backs in. I do it here and abroad now because it's safer.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This is all assuming the driver knows how to actually reverse into a spot

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The pull through is the panacea that doesn't require reverse. It only requires a few extra steps to and from the parking lot. I'm taking this to my grave, barring any future use of handicapped spaces in old age.

by ruthrohan 1 week ago

Nah, just that your pull out game is weak.😏

by Anonymous 1 week ago

ya you guys just need to do it way faster. most people who back in do it slow AF

by Anonymous 1 week ago

100% agree. Also, parking at the back of the lot is so much easier and faster than trying to fight for a spot up close.

by Equivalent_Back 1 week ago

Depends if you have a backup camera and the quality of the camera. My Mazda CX-5 has a great camera that also alerts to movement. I have a better view than pulling forward, especially around larger vehicles. Now on my sedan I am using in Japan, I may have a backup camera, but its is not calibrated to the car, so for view only and it takes far longer for me to backup with mirrors only. Especially in the insanely tight spots over here at some parking lots.

by kelvinwolff 1 week ago

I feel like its more situational than black or white.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

My apartment parking lot was designed by the architects 8yo who got given a can of paint and a ruler. I have to back in, there's no other way around it I'm now good at it. It's not an always thing, but it's a skill that drivers should have in the toolkit. If you live/drive in a city, it's quite often the better play.

by MaintenanceMuch 1 week ago

Can't imagine how fun it is waiting for some douche to back in, and pull out of, angled spaces.

by StillNatural 1 week ago

Unless you need to access your boot/trunk then there is no real reason not to back in. It doesn't really take any extra time, it's easier and safer. I never pull in forwards.

by Legitimate-Help4182 1 week ago

Every time that I see someone backing into a parking space they take at least 3x as long to do so or fail utterly so many times that I have no idea how long it took as I end up driving away so as not to laugh at them to their face. Maybe you're the minority of drivers who is competent enough to back into a parking space quickly but in my experience you're very much in the minority.

by TransitionPristine21 1 week ago

Easy there, enemy of culture.

by gbalistreri 1 week ago

Where I work were required to back into a parking spot wasn't a big fan at first but I've grown to actually prefer it

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yep. Only time I pull in is into diagonal parking spots, because pulling out of those is really awkward on those one-way lanes in parking lots, might as well just back out coz then I only have to turn 45 degrees and not 135 degrees

by Striking_Earth 1 week ago

I prefer backing into my driveway but most parking lots where I live the spaces are slanted and the row us only one way so it's harder to pull out after backing in. Much easier, faster, and safer to pull in and back out in those situations. Usually at the hospital I choose to back in or pull in based on which side the crossed out part is on. I need it on the drivers side to get my husband in and out of the backseat so I don't care about anything else in those situations.

by AffectionateSpend 1 week ago

In Japan this is normal.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Is this not common consensus? These days I find it twice as easy to reverse in rather than fwd park

by Exotic_Aardvark 1 week ago

Maybe in older cars. I have had times being between two larger trucks where my vehicle warned me something was coming up when reverse was on and I can see pretty well with the backup camera. Even if I backed in I wouldn't see the car coming until the nose of my car was well out of the spot.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's actually not except for the few who can smoothly back into a space on the first try. That is very very few of the people that I see who need three or four or five... or six attempts to get it straight and in the spot. They use far more time than they would have backing out of a spot trying to back in because they don't know what they're doing and don't know how to drive a vehicle the size of the one they own. All that said, if you are a pro who can roll up, one turn, and back right in, I will personally applaud you as you have made your life and that of others easier with your skill. I've seen like two of these ever.

by Oreillyaimee 1 week ago

The only time it isn't superior is the supermarket when you want to roll the trolly right up to your boot.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Backing out into a larger area is quicker and easier than backing into a smaller area. Backing in especially when trucks do it holds up traffic in the aisle.

by Timely_Interest_7526 1 week ago

It's true. If I'm in a busy parking lot I always make sure to back in because it's a lot safer to leave the spot. Though if the area is empty and I'm feeling lazy I'll just pull in.

by hortense50 1 week ago

Bro what? Putting a car into reverse is just as easy as drive.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

What's the logic here? How is it easier? If anything, if I was a car thief I'd rather break into the one that pulled in forwards because I'm more out of sight when I'm beside.

by Legitimate-Help4182 1 week ago

lol imagine thinking that pulling in to a parking spot is a theft deterrent.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The problem is when you've got a line of cars waiting for you to move while you slowly reverse park, realize you suck at it so you gotta pull out, realign and try again. If you're not holding anyone up, go for it.

by ldietrich 1 week ago

It's the opposite. Backing out you always have more room than backing in. That's why backing in takes longer. From the people I know who back in, the trend is that they're not the brightest.

by Moenlily 1 week ago

Backing in is the equivalent of T-posing to assert your dominance over other drivers. Continue to do it.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Popular opinion anywhere outside the US, where drivers are more competent

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I actually park better when I back in and it's easier to me to do so. I always end up crooked when I pull in.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Def not faster. So annoyed by people backing into a spot bc it takes them so long

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Backing out is very fast...especially with backup cameras and i literally don't know absingle person whose car doesnt have one.

by Timely_Interest_7526 1 week ago

My brother's car doesn't have a backup camera.

by Striking_Earth 1 week ago

It as the same amount of driving either way lmao, you are backing in one time, and driving into it one time. Same amount of vulnerability either way. You just delay it until the end of your drive 😉

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Exactly so you are more vulnerable and do it more slowly. So it's more dangerous AND slower. I'm glad someone understood

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Sure makes people feel superior at best. Have you seen most people try to back into parking spots? Only a few are any good at it and quicker than just pulling in. As long as you don't hit my vehicle, I couldn't care less. But good on you feeling superior to us simple folk.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm not talking about JUST when you arrive, unless you plan to never leave. It's faster to back in then pull out than it is to pull in and back out added together.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

We need to test this! I need data! I'd bet its a wash that likely insignificantly leans to pulling in forward and severely dependent on the driver's skill level. But leaving a parking spot backing out, I could easily beat your time backing into a spot.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Interesting, the pedestrian injuries make a lot of sense. Still not convinced it is faster overall.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

it's also more efficient aka faster

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Not a convincing article for lower total time. It does reduce hazards.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Nope, it's inefficient. Backing into a smaller confined area is more difficult and time consuming than backing into a larger open area.

by Royal_Purple_1251 1 week ago

I'm glad you know more than every study. Must be tough to know everything without having learned a thing. car parts the wise drive how stuff works some law firm that made it to googles front page

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You're welcome. Your opinion links mean nothing op. A lot of times there are no people or cars behind when backing into an open area. If there are multiple people or cars going by while backing out then maybe it's a tie? It takes most people way too long to back into their parking spots. If you are backing into your spot you have to get it right, if you need any slight adjustment or need to put it in drive for even a split second then you have officially become a landmine and a true regard for wasting everyone's time.

by Royal_Purple_1251 1 week ago

It literally makes no difference. You're just changing the order of steps. That's like saying 7+1 is different than 4+4

by Anonymous 1 week ago

But you aren't. For the most part there will not be people walking, biking, or driving in the stall you going to park in. Therefore it is safer to back into it since the reduced visibility that comes with backing up wouldn't put anyone at risk.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Are you punctual and/or drive a manual?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I prefer pulling through from one spot to the other. No backing up required to enter or exit.

by Fun-Resolve487 1 week ago

Faster? Not even close. Safer? Not even close. Have you driven before?

by Old_Signature 1 week ago

I drive as a job backing in is 100% safer and can be quicker thats on the driver

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm talking about exiting and entering combined. Not JUST when you're arriving.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The back of your vehicle has red lights to alert others that you're pulling out of a parking space. The front of your vehicle does not, making it more dangerous.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yawn.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm not going to tell you how to stick it in. That's between you and your partner(s)

by Anonymous 1 week ago
