Well it is their tax money, but how much really? 0.3% of the national budget goes to NASA so that one individual is paying next to nothing. You will spend more on lunch today than what you will give in tax dollars to NASA this year. If we took away all the satellite communication and GPS and all the other stuff they provide, I'm sure they'd complain a lot less about their $5 a year or whatever they paid in taxes that actually went to NASA.

Or do you think most of human progress is built on 99% duds and failures? How do you think progress is even made? It's made by finding what works and doesn't work.

Tech progress is incremental, we don't just come up with crazy inventions over night. The stuff they are doing there is advancing other fields of study too like, computer programming, AI, material research etc.
