+43 5 is the evenest of the odd numbers, amirite?

by Danielike 1 week ago

If you ask someone for a number from 1-10, you will find out that 7 is the oddest of odd numbers btw

by Anonymous 1 week ago

My teacher said recently that when he was training people to be become judges in some 1-10 point based sport (or whatever), they had to tell them that 5 isn't "in the middle"/average, 7 is "in the middle"/average

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yeah, people are just bad with averages. Same with gaming, looks rating, literature and movie reviews, music, hell anything you can assign a 1-10 value, you'll see that 7 is the median number

by Independent-Papaya91 1 week ago

I can answer this question -- school grading scales. 0-59 is an F and generally a failure no matter what, 70 is passing but not great. It's ingrained in our processes since we're children.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Beat me to it! I agree I think 70% passing is definitely what influences the idea that 7 is average, while 50% would be a failure. I think this is also why many also think 6/10 is borderline trash because seeing a D on your homework still sucks.

by cristchristian 1 week ago

We don't have that system where I live. Schools and universities follow a 1-5 system, where 1 and 2 is failure, 3 is a pass, 4 is good and 5 is superb. But this very same thing with 7s happens here as well.

by Independent-Papaya91 1 week ago

Yeah, when I have to rate something I try to think about it and kinda feel bad for giving it a 7, but I bc also try to give it a 5 when I fell like it's "in the middle"

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm guessing that the grading scale that we learn in school is partially to blame for that. We are taught from a young age that 7/10 is just average

by No_Mixture 1 week ago

It's not exclusively an American thing, it's worldwide. I think the issue lies elsewhere, and it could even be that the school grading system of USA is a reflection of this bizarre trend

by Independent-Papaya91 1 week ago

All about balance. 1 + 2 + … + 7 = 28 and 8 + 9 + 10 = 27. /j

If you take the linguistic approach however, you'll find that 7 is the least odd number. Odd can mean „different to what is usual or expected" by its definition. So if you were to ask random people to pick a random number between 1 and 10 the most likely answer would be 7 (it was throughly explained by Veritasium on YouTube why people pick (3)7 for „randomness" | The statistic is shown at 2:13 for the range of 1-100), making it the expected answer and effectively the least odd number in that case.

by aisha06 1 week ago

Everyone agrees it's the most odd number therefore it is the least odd number? That's some interesting logic lol. I hope you realize odd doesn't mean rare.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's not about being odd. It's about being random.

by lutherstiedeman 1 week ago

They didn't say random they said odd. Odd also does not mean random. you'll find that 7 is the least odd number.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

73% of statistics that feature the numbers 7 or 3 are made up. I joke but there was a study conducted (I don't have a source) of people randomly polled to give a random number. Other than 1, 100, and 50 I believe, the two highest by far were 37 and 73

by abbotteldon 1 week ago

is your source the veritasium video

by That_Character 1 week ago

I saw the same study. It's weird. People just feel that 7 and 3 are more random. Fact is people are awful random number generators

by Witty_Revolution_714 1 week ago

Wait what, wouldnt it be 4.5 or an I just a total idiot lol

It's a Turkish capital dotted "i". Turkish has two letters corresponding to our "i", one dotted and one not. Here they are in a font with serifs which makes it a little clearer: h, ı, i, j, k, ... H, I, İ, J, K

And yet seven is the most uneven number in base ten

by Anonymous 1 week ago

No it's one of the oddest numbers imo i always use 7 when i want to make a fake number believable. If i say I ate 27 burgers instead of 26 i think its just more believable. 23 instead of 22 and so on

by Margotstracke 1 week ago

Same here. 7 and 3 are the oddest numbers

by norbertbrown 1 week ago

No. 2 is the oddest number. It's the only even prime.

YOU mean multiples!

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's a base 10 number system, and 10 has prime of 2 and 5. Dividing by 5 and multiplying by two create the same series if digits. (0.2 and 2; 0.04 and 4, 0.008 and 8) and vice versa (5 and 0.5, 25 and 0.25, 125 and 0.125, 625 and 0.0625)

by gregory81 1 week ago

Every even number is divisible by 1. 1 is the evenest

by orinpadberg 1 week ago

Only because we use a base 10 number system. If we used a base 14 system, 7 would be the "evenest"

But it depends on what rounding system you are using. 4.3 rounds to 4. 4.5 rounds to either 4 or 5 depending on what system you are using.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

well that's not the case so it's a bit redundant to point out. If gravity were twice as weak, mount Everest would be much taller

by Zealousideal_Tax 1 week ago

1 is possibly even more "even" as odd numbers go.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

So..whats the oddest even number then?

by Greedy-Accountant 1 week ago

Someone want to explain why?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Fingers

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Because it is in the middle of 1 - 10.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

because we use multiples of 5s for lots of things in daily life?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Because fingers

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Because it's half of 10.

by Lilaosinski 1 week ago

We call that a round number.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Idk, 25 feels pretty even. I get that it ends in 5, and is also 5 x 5, but 25 is 1/4th of 100.

by ResolutionFirm4722 1 week ago

"nine" is even evener than "five" because it's more balanced

by Anonymous 1 week ago

2 is the oddest of the primes.

by ZealousidealZebra 1 week ago

It's actually either 13 or 127. Those are my rules and I'm sticking to it.
