There are too many dogs in the airport, amirite?

You can bring dogs on planes. Not just service dogs. So they don't need to prove anything beyond paying the pet fee and following the rules in place for having a dog on board or in cargo. ETA. The only reason you see mainly small dogs like the yorkie you cited is because big dogs are checked with luggage and go under the plane. Only big service dogs are allowed on the plane.

Yes. It's been a long time since I've brought a dog on a plane, but I used to when my old dog was young and I'd fly home to my parent's house for school breaks. He had to be under 15 lbs and kept in a carrier the entire time (except at designated pet relief areas), and under the seat during the flight. He also had to be up to date on shots. Many times his "ticket" cost as much or even more than mine depending on the airline. I never get the allergy argument, if you're allergic, you're going to be allergic whether it's a regular dog or a service dog.

I fly with my dog and the fee is always a flat rate. So on Southwest for example it's $125 each way. That's usually not more than a normal ticket.

We got where we were going, I let her out in the car, and she immediately hopped up into the hatchbatcks cargo cover and I swear to god she peed a half liter into that.

Our last flight we had a couple with two very large dogs. They were not in service vests but were very well behaved. I was initially concerned when I saw them and figured the owners must have booked extra seats because how would they fit under the seats when I can barely fit my backpack. But after boarding, they curled up under the seat and stayed put for the full flight.

The rules are if it is NOT a service dog, they need to stay in the carrier if you're not in the "dog relief" area. On the plane, they need to stay under the seat, in their carrier. Or on your lap, in the carrier. My dog has gotten loose on the plane when I went to the bathroom and I felt awful because I had to travel with my little fluffy dog. The CAs were super understanding, but I never made my dog a problem for others.

But there's none of that. It isn't a restaurant where there are rules of no dog or service dogs only. There's no exclusions - it's allowed. Any animal, service / emotional / on its way to its adopted parents. It's all dogs / cats whatever if it's in the bag. You can literally just buy a ticket for your dog. They just need to fit into a specific bag or go under the plane. People aren't being assholes by doing what they're allowed to do.

I have allergies. Retriever breeds and cats are among my worst triggers. Know what I do before flying? Take my medication because I can never be certain I WON'T come in contact with either the animal itself, or an owner who always manages to have a little bit of fur on their clothes. It's truly not that hard to take responsibility for your own health and take precautions.

Youre assuming that people on an airplane with animals aren't thinking about how it impacts others at all which isn't necessarily the case. Sometimes it's unavoidable. People move and need to take animals with them, sometimes people OR animals have anxiety so they travel together, or they're being relocated for adoption, or many other reasons the animal needs to be on the plane. If you're entitled to defend the small minority of people who take animals on a plane without a care for anyone else, I'm entitled to defend the other people on a plane who are anxious about whether the animal will misbehave, or cause allergies, etc. since not everyone with an animal on a plane is disregarding others. I agree that not everything that isn't a rule should be done, but you have no idea what goes on in the mind of everyone with an animal on a plane, so you can't compare them to people who listen to loud music or are purposefully hostile to others. Sometimes it's unavoidable to have animals on the plane, and it's completely controllable to not yell at people.

I'm not saying all people who take animals on planes are this way. I have met a shockingly large number of people who are. When I criticize that behavior I am reliably attacked for it.

An emotional support animal doesn't have the training to be in public contexts that aren't dog-friendly. An untrained dog in those situations would likely make anxiety worse rather than better through their unwanted behaviors. If someone has panic disorder and needs the dog to lay down on them or sit in their lap or something, they need to either fully train their dog up to service animal specifications before bringing them everywhere or get an actual pre-trained service dog. Only landlords are prohibited from banning emotional support animals. A large emotional support dog would need to travel in the cargo area in a crate rather than next to their person.

IMO toddlers and little kids are way more obnoxious than babies while flying. Babies won't kick/climb on the back of your seat, or stare creepily at you through the gap between seats. Baby cries are also much easier to tune out than toddler tantrums.

You obviously don't know that you are allowed to fly with dogs. Dogs under a certain size can be with you at your seat (I think they have to be small enough to stay in a carrier that fits under the seat.) Larger dogs basically get checked with the luggage and go under the plane in a carrier.

Until those policies change, the average Jane or Joe doesn't really get to take this to the GP to complain to us as it really isn't on us, we don't create the airport policies in place. You can just buy a ticket for your dog on most airlines if it fits in a carrier under the seat. Service dogs can not require proof or documentation in the US, the ADA has very clear rules about this.

Service dogs are life-saving medical equipment. Requiring papers 24/7 could kill someone and be impractical places like at the beach. There's also no way to certify since they can be self-trained. Any business can and should remove a misbehaving service dog. They aren't allowed to bark, be on furniture, jump, etc.

Emotional support animals aren't a "thing" anymore. Nearly all the dogs you see in airports are simply pets. If they are big dogs, they travel in cargo. If they are small dogs, they can be stashed under the seat in front of you in an appropriate carrier. Simply put, pets are allowed on planes - nearly every airline allows it explicitly. If you see a big dog in the cabin, it's an exception to the rule. That dog is an official, documented, trained service dog for a person with a disability. They have cracked down on "emotional support" animals in the cabin because people were bringing untrained pets on planes, and they didn't behave properly. Any fully trained service dog will behave perfectly on an airplane.

Airlines should offer a way for the owner and the dog to be re-assigned to another flight because of your condition. This. I am highly allergic to animals and when I tell some people that I can't handle having dogs in a contained space-I get hives, I get told I'm just a hater or dogs are better than people. The funny thing is that up until 20 years ago-you never saw a dog or cat on a flight. People left them home to be watched or your put them in a kennel-And no that is not harmful to the pet. Harmfull is making animals fly when studies have shown that it is stressful on the pet. But I think people are lonely and infantile their pets now. And can't or won't understand that people have very valid reasons for allergic reactions.

If we had a culture of actually fking training our dogs I would be more into it. When I visited Germany it was incredibly dog friendly. People brought their dogs all sorts of places. But the dogs were extremely well behaved and ignored everyone so it was not an issue in that regard (if you had allergies you'd still be SOL though). But here people don't seem to have any shame about bringing their untrained and/or aggressive dog in public.

Service dogs are allowed to be self-trained so no proof exists. The ADA already allows misbehaving service dogs to be asked to leave. Airports and airlines can enforce this but many don't and that is where the problem is.
