It's trivial to put your phone in a bulky case if you want more heft. For those of that carry our phone in a jeans pocket, thin is important (and you can't make a fat phone thin by adding a case).

Slimmer ones are slippery and easy to drop down, easy for companies who have repair shops, easy for them to sell spare parts, etc..
