It's just a more useless version of cash. Yeah, if you got it on a sale, that's good. But paying $25 to convert your $25 into the exact same amount but in chipotle bucks is pointless. I won't complain about getting gift cards, I think it's nice to get anything at all. But I won't be giving gift cards. The criticism doesn't come from giving a gift card instead of a physical gift. The criticism comes from giving a gift card instead of cash.

I think it depends on who you're giving them to, your relationship with them, and what the store is. It's one thing getting a grocery store gift card for Christmas from your parents, it's quite another to get it from your spouse on your wedding anniversary.

Generally, gift cards are very good gifts for strangers/acquaintances and very bad gifts for people that you are close to.

Idk cuz some ppl I'm close to are impossible to shop for, or they have everything already. It's better than giving them nothing. And I always tell ppl if they ask what I want, that I'm happy getting a giftcard. Anyone I'm close to knows where I shop or what I eat, so I'm always excited to get a giftcard to those places.

Not to discount your sentiment but crispy cash in the same denomination always fits and is always well received.
