+52 Unrealistic sword fight…is also fun , just because it's not accurate doesn't mean it's bad, amirite?

by karlie18 1 week ago

Most "realistic" sword fights are over in 1-2 swings and would make horrible entertainment. At least for one vs one fights.

by Classic_Enthusiasm 1 week ago

Yeah..pure realistic sword fight end almost instantly the moment one of them drop their guard It almost like a cowboy quick draw more than a duel , Which is hard to pull off in entertainment media It unfair so many people hate on fight scene these days just because it's not realistic There is an unrealistic sword fight that overly silly and stupid But there is also a good one where they pick a real life technique and still keep the flashy move , It make scene more complex yet still looks and feel super badass

by karlie18 1 week ago

Even though it was unrealistic i really liked the sword fighting in "Kill Bill", had a style that fit it well, havent seen many other ones that come close besides the old asian movies like "Shogun Assassin" and such

by Classic_Enthusiasm 1 week ago

Actually, a Western-style quickdraw scene in a movie about swords could be really awesome if pulled off right. Like, if you did a semi-realistic movie that basically just set out to give audiences a medieval retelling of Tombstone, I'd bet you could make it one of the best movies of the year. Generally speaking, however, I do agree with your points.

"They're less likely to get nervy with Doc on the street trebuchet." I like it, I think it could work.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Bro, wait til you hear about anime.

by oberbrunnerrico 1 week ago

I'm quite familiar with it. None of the more medieval-style ones I've seen have done what I'm going for.

by ToeUnlikely5653 1 week ago

You mean Ninja Scroll isn't accurate???

by Dietrichbillie 1 week ago

I didn't name a specific one because you can watch basically any anime that has 2 sword fighters in it, and there will be a scene like what you described. Two guys with swords having a dialogue like an old western stand off, and one of them cuts the other guy in half so fast that you don't even see him move. It's happened over and over and over again in basically every anime with a sword.

by oberbrunnerrico 1 week ago

Where do you get that idea? That would depend on a lot of factors. Are there shields involved, as that could exrend a duel significantly. If it was fighters in plate armor they could be at it for a long time. A "swordfight" is really just too vague to determine that. People have been using swords for millenia and the variables change in each scenario. Two unarmored, unshielded swordsman would definitely be over quickly in most circumstances though.

by Late_Possibility 1 week ago

True it was a generalization

by Classic_Enthusiasm 1 week ago

That depends heavily on the type of sword and what armor they are wearing.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

For scenes where they are just in plain clothes, yeah I'd agree, but take two trained people fighting in full armor for example. Neither of them are getting taken out in 2 hits. It's kinda the whole point of being a trained person in armor.

I will never understand the people who whinged about people twirling their lightsabers around in the Star Wars prequels as being unrealistic for this reason. My dude, they're using laser swords that could dismember their wielder every time they turn them on, much less swing them around. I think some suspension of disbelief is allowed here.

by Little-Direction-992 1 week ago

It's quite literally space wizards using laser swords at 4000 degrees, there has to be some form of disbelief but there's also in universe fighting styles too

by Flat-Classroom 1 week ago

Because it's inconsistent with the logic presented in universe - that being the existing fighting styles and the universal fighting concepts that were applied in the original trilogy. Saying that it's fine because it's a movie about space wizards with laser swords is like saying that it'd be fine if somebody in Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings just produced a lightsaber, killed someone with it, and then disposed of it and nobody ever mentioned it again.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm not saying it's like if Harry Potter appeared in Star Wars or vice versa. I'm saying whichever Star Wars film you watch, it's still a world where their weapon of choice could very easily dismember them every time they turn them on. Keeping that in mind, getting upset because the actors swing them differently to how they did 20 years prior is beyond pathetic.

by Little-Direction-992 1 week ago

Ikr. Like the people complaining about the throne room fight in last jedi are so exhausting Like they're bright red samurai lookin dudes fighting space wizards with laser swords. It looks awesome, just give it a break 😭

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yes that's my point If movies were more realistic, that super badass action hero would likely get shot in his first altercation and wouldn't be able to continue saving the world, let alone pull off another 50 gun fights without getting shot up until the very last confrontation Same goes for anybody with a sword

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Here is an excellent example of authentic fighting with swords and other period weapons woven into a compelling storyline.

by Moist-Mortgage3941 1 week ago

Unrealistic and realism have their place. If something has been very grounded in realism so far, I want consistency. If it's been a bit looser, then it's okay if the fight is too.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Realistic swordfighting, if done correctly, is way cooler than regular dancing with sticks. And realistic doesn't mean that it will look like HEMA tournament. example

by Anonymous 1 week ago

That not realistic but they understand the fighting style of long sword so it's look cool fast and intresting

by karlie18 1 week ago

All the moves they make are straight out of fencing manuals. The only unrealistic thing is that it is scripted.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Your summary of bad action is basically exactly what happens in the first fight even if rebel moon. The protag is spinning around and dealing with enemies. One guy is holding back looking for an clear shot. Then there's slow mo and we get 10 seconds of the gunman staring at the protag's back with a clear shot and doing nothing

by MetalTraditional 1 week ago

Yup, it's all about matching the tone of the rest of the story. In a gritty historically accurate story set in medieval Europe, I expect duelists to be exhausted and mud covered in thirty seconds like they would have been in that setting. In an action thriller with fantasy or science fiction elements, you can have elaborate ten minute duels between space wizards because they can fight that way. Aragorn can hack through plate armor like it's not there because he's superhuman. If you show the audience historically accurate knights fighting like Jedi or Aragorn, it's going to detract from the historical accuracy. Likewise, showing the audience a realistic duel between regular humans in an action story about superhumans is going to be boring. Neither are bad on their own, just when used outside where they make sense.

Likewise, showing the audience a realistic duel between regular humans in an action story about superhumans is going to be boring. I do agree with everything else you said, but actually I think this one has some merit. Like, showing how a superhero/villain would eviscerate someone in an instant "as if it were real" is a great dramatic device.

by Little-Direction-992 1 week ago

That's true, you could even spin that one in an interesting way with the right approach.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Hell even a fight between a sword and a gun is fun to watch, just look at Black Lagoon! You've also got wild gunfights like in Equilibrium, that's never meant to be accurate or realistic. It's just fun to watch.

by RazzmatazzFit8415 1 week ago

More realistic fights usually feel more dangerous and intense. That's why they're usually better. Fights don't need to be completely realistic, but they should be reasonable and the characters should be trying to actually kill each other.

by Flatleyfidel 1 week ago

One of the most "realistic" fight scenes I remember was Roman Polanski's Macbeth. The final confrontation of Macbeth and Macduff was a slug fest Involving swords, fists, and even pieces of firewood.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Same thing for westerns' "duels". Still the good the bad and the ugly "duel" with the 3 guys in the end is iconic and it's realistic as far as I know.

Most fights look like someone is eating soup with a fork.

by hoppecarlo 1 week ago

Just because I'm bad sword fight doesn't mean I'm a bad sword fight

by Anonymous 1 week ago

That is some broken English

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I dont consume fiction for realism. Realism isnt fun or entertaining.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I live in reality. I don't want my entertainment to be constrained by it. If you put me in a room with only UFC and WCW, I'll take the fake stuff every time.

by Wide_Sector 1 week ago

I love how you used WCW as an example 😂 I agree though 100%. I LOVE lucha libre but it's arguably the least realistic wrestling out there and that's why people don't like it. Japanese strong style is pretty funny too, but far less entertaining to me when they just stand there and take turns chopping each other. I like fast-pace and high flying lucha libre action

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Very much this, stuff doesn't have to be realistic to be fun
