+39 Normalise saying "love you" to friends and colleagues, amirite?

by Historical_Cycle 1 week ago

What does loving someone mean to you? I like my colleagues, but I won't be first in line in case they need a kidney.

by Holiday_Delivery 1 week ago

For me it's just a simple deep feeling of affection.

Being in love, and loving being around someone in the context of the relationship, are different things IMO.

Who said anything about being in love? I love my dad, but I'm not in love with him. I don't love my coworkers. They're just people I sometimes like being around. Why would I tell them I love them, when that would be an obvious lie?

Parents, spouse, and kids get "I love you" regularly. Friends get a "love ya dude" occasionally.

Thats a very fair allocation

by Historical_Cycle 1 week ago

Disagree. I think doing that takes away from the meaning of love. If you love everyone, you love no one. You can be kind to people without devaluing the highest possible feeling in the world.

Is love really the highest possible feeling in the world?? Love is simply just a deep affection for another.

by robelgerald 1 week ago

Yes.

Yeah I was about to say this. I only say it to my family, or my friends (when I'm drunk). Cause I do love them. But saying it to everyone cheapens it.

I just don't love my colleagues . For friends its show don't tell .

"Love you" is something reserved for special types of relationships and people — and I disagree that we should normalize saying this to friends and especially colleagues. It is inappropriate to tell people you love them. We can achieve what you are aiming for by simply telling people things we love that they do, or things we love about them — in the right context, and if it is appropriate. If we have a special friendship, and a deep conversation is being had, we can definitely express for love for them as a friend, and should cite examples of why we feel the way we do. But, just saying "love you" casually to friends or colleagues 9 times out of 10 is rarely appropriate.

This is problematic also because English doesn't have an equivalent expression for friendly/familiar love (unlike romance languages for example) which is a bummer.

Everyone is my friend, I love you my bestie

Love you too mate

It sounds insincere when people say "love you" to often .

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Not going to cheapen it

by Feeling_Worth_9663 1 week ago

Don't say I love you to colleagues that's weird.

by Alfredweber 1 week ago

Then the word "love" would lose its meaning

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't want to devalue the word "love".

Welcome to Costco, I love you

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I just hate the lack of "I" love you. Put the I!! Otherwise it's impersonal and means about as much as the cashier telling me to have a good day.

I would be totally freaked out if a colleague told me they loved me. I just don't have that kind of relationship with people I work with. Friends, okay, I guess.

Why would I tell someone I don't love that I love them. I would tell family, or a girlfriend or wife if I had one, that I love them, but why would I tell a colleague?

by Plenty-Strain-2005 1 week ago

Is this not already normal?? I know some people have issues saying to but they have issues saying it to everyone not just friends. I have told friends I "love them" for decades they never seemed to think it was weird or abnormal.
