+42 Tattoos suck and are pointless, amirite?

by Caryemard 1 week ago

And so long as you understand what you're signing up for and take care of it properly, then you can do what you want. Fun is still a meaning to something. It makes you happy and matters to you.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Ya people sometimes are like "any meaning behind that?" and I just go "it's a wolf dude it looks sick"

by meggie57 1 week ago

I actually used to have an issue with self-harm and ironically got my first tattoo as a way to no longer self harm. Tattoos aren't seen the same as cut scars or other self-harm scars. That said, anytime I go through anything traumatic or emotionally painful, I get a tattoo... So I guess tattooing is just a more socially acceptable form of self harm

by dharris 1 week ago

I've actually met a lot of people that get tattoos for the reason you described. So I don't think you're alone in that.

by Background-Road-9497 1 week ago

It used to be more used like that. I even it out by getting a tattoo for good things too

by garfieldreinger 1 week ago

oof, felt that. i'm past that but my thighs are beyond fixing, so i plan to get nice, big tattoos on them to be able to wear shorts again.

by Intelligent-Rest-176 1 week ago

It's art. Not self harm

by Anonymous 1 week ago

By this logic any medical procedure is also self harm. I guess in a basic way you are consenting to let someone do something painful to you. But I do not believe tattoos, blood draws or surgery are the same kind of self-harm as cutting yourself.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I got a tattoo that's a symbol for overcoming challenges and becoming stronger for the next challenge, the pain of getting a tattoo was also symbolic

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Not every tattoo needs to have a special meaning. Maybe they just like the art work.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Tattoos aren't that painful, and after a while it actually feels good, like a release almost. Signed guy with a small collection of tattoos

by FitSeaworthiness 1 week ago

It's interesting that you said that one ear hurt more than the most because I found that when I was getting my half sleeve, there were parts of my arm that were way more sensitive than the other parts. So like I'd be completely fine and like you be sort of led into the calmness of the buzzing of the needle and just like you know, someone doing something over and over and then he hit some sensitive spot and I'd almost jerk in the chair. Do you think maybe one side of your head is a little little more sensitive than the other?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Eh some of mine were painful and some weren't. Sometimes it's artist skill, sometimes pain tolerance, part of body, etc But to me its no worse than going to the dentist and dealing with that. I hate the dentist, I'd rather get tattooed haha

by Hopeful-Emergency-81 1 week ago

I feel the same way. People look at my my tattoos and think that it must've been so painful, that must've hurt a lot, how did you manage to sit for so long, etc. and I just tell them it doesn't feel painful to me. I actually like the way it feels.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm covering giant scars with artwork so I can stand to look at myself in the mirror again.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Just the idea of covering your body with tattoos seems strange to me. Why would you ever do that? Because it's my body. I only get the one, so I'm gonna decorate it as I please.

by emmanuel67 1 week ago

Decorate your temple. The whole ‘treat your body like it's a temple' hell yeah I'm gonna add stain glass windows and beautiful statues and artwork

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yep exactly! Not one regardless of the religion. All are covered in beautiful pieces.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If you got more bodies you wouldn't decorate them?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If, hypothetically, a person had multiple bodies, no, I wouldn't decorate them all.

by emmanuel67 1 week ago

Dude, may have more bodies in his basement. You never know.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You never know. But I do

by Kschimmel 1 week ago

The thing, as mindblowing as this sounds, the people that do them don't think they look terrible

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Exactly idk why it has to be so deep and strange for some people. I have a full sleeve with flowers (and some animals) because I freaking love flowers, that's pretty much it.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Exactly. I love tattoos. That's why I got them. And want to hear something else crazy? I got them for me. I don't care if anyone else likes or dislikes them.

by Traditional_Shape 1 week ago

Because the people that get them, can. What's the point of anything? We'll all die one day and be forgotten. Have fun with it.

by Playful-Relation 1 week ago

clearly OP...

by wisozklaurie 1 week ago

I agree completely, but this is one of the many things that's just going to be impossible to understand about other people. It's a question about the baby and the bathwater. I can't understand why anyone would like a tattoo, but then I can't really explain why I like the things I do like either. I can only assume there's a certain magic about getting a tattoo, only that I'm blind to it. And thus, the world comes into being.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I've always been frustrated when people throw out perfectly good bathwater with a useless baby. That bathwater should not have been wasted.

by cbergstrom 1 week ago

Yeah! That bathwater should be put in tiny jars to be sold around the world!

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I agree. I feel the same way about religion… I think it's just something you have to feel which I have never felt, but obviously many people do

by Additional_Music 1 week ago

For sure, that's a very good example. I'm not religious so for me it's a lot easier to see the bathwater and no baby at all.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I always see it described as an almost "addiction" (I am tatted) and I kinda get it, it's really fun to do and you get a rush of excitement. So yeah, if you're into tattoos, it's kinda magical and fun

by murraytyrel 1 week ago

Someone never experienced the pull to adorn oneself with art that becomes one with with their very being. Wealth may fade, loves may be lost, but this dumb little frog on my arm will endure with me throughout.

by Equivalent_Bank 1 week ago

Honestly, in the scheme of life everything we do is pointless, isn't it? Nice clothes, fancy car, expensive phone. What does it do other than feed our own egos? My ego is happily fed with tattoos that mean something to ME, not you, not anyone else. They are for ME. They commemorate either special moments or special people. Something I carry with me always to look at and remember where I came from and why I am who I am today.

by Stacy63 1 week ago

Creative self expression. Some people have really meaningful tattoos, like to remember a close friend or relative. Some have cultural relevance as well, like Polynesian tattoos.

by Short_Ad 1 week ago

You do realize some places in the world it's part of their heritage 🙄

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Because I want to and didn't need nor want to factor in your opinion.

by GlitteringSpring 1 week ago

First ever recorded tattoo is on Ötzi which dates the practice at least to 3,300 BCE, I'd say it's so culturally ingrained in most cultures that we just like it no matter how pointless or symbolic the tattoo might be. But hey, if you don't like them there's no shame in that - whatever floats your boat

by Turbulent_Part9731 1 week ago

If you don't understand tattoos just say that, but they are not pointless

by Ok-Smell5800 1 week ago

I agree, but mainly just on the fact that I can't see liking something on me like that over an entire lifetime. I think it could be good for tokens of people-past, to have a "piece of them with you." Even though as it goes now, I will never get one. I would think most people get them for the wrong reasons though, just feel like they gotta.

by Specialist-Sea 1 week ago

Because I was young and stupid, wouldnt get more at this age now, and kind of wish I didnt have them, not going to fork out money to remove them as I paid quite a bit to get mine

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I agree and I apply that opinion to myself but that doesn't extend to others and I think they are free to do as they wish. I mostly see it as money I could be investing for my future but yeah I have never wanted to make anything on my body permanent.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You are alive for about 70 years , this useless meat prison of a body is going to rot and most ppl will never know who you are . So why not . If you enjoy them and they mean something or make you happy to see , Who cares. Some people collect dumb things they never use I collect dumb art on my skin to each their own really . Nothing is any more pointless than anything else

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Why would you ever do that? What desire is fulfilled by permanently drawing something on your body? Have you considered asking these questions to someone who has tattoos?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I just like it, that's enough

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The same reason people choose clothes, hair color, nail color, jewelry, etc. It's just experession in a different form.

by douglasdante 1 week ago

I love tattoos, most people would say mine are stupid but guess what i like them and thats all that matters.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You know what? I'm going to get another one just to spite you.

by NoLeave 1 week ago

Boomer rhetoric. My grandmother used to say this type of stuff.

by Maximuskoelpin 1 week ago

My grandma is cool and she likes my tattoos (well, ones she's seen anyway) despite being 82

by Anonymous 1 week ago

That's awesome, you Be sure to call her today

by Maximuskoelpin 1 week ago

I'll call when I'm arranging a visit, she has alzherimers and will only forget a phone call

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Oh I can understand how challenging that condition is on the family members of those who suffer that condition.

by Maximuskoelpin 1 week ago

Yeah, it's becoming a challenge. My uncle is trying to get her into a care home as she's getting dangerous to leave alone

by Anonymous 1 week ago

That's great of him. I hope that it all works out for your family. Alzheimer's is challenging for everyone. It's important to stay strong during these times.

by Maximuskoelpin 1 week ago

Thank you

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Ur granny is based, whats her number

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I was born with a very naturally skinny body. I hate how my body looks most of the time. If I can get some color and designs of things I like, why wouldn't I? Now I'm skinny but colorful

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I can't even commit to putting stickers on things so why would I ever trust myself with getting a tattoo

by Consistent_News_8479 1 week ago

Everything is pointless

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Not your body not your choice. Tattoos are no different than makeup or piercings

by Wendell75 1 week ago

No, they're very different. You can take out a piercing. You can wipe off makeup.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

OP wasn't saying they wanted to choose for people whether they got tattoos did they?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

much of the cool factor is gone now that everyone and their grandmother have one

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I dont think its dumb. I actually think they can look really cool. Its just not for me.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Finally, someone agrees with me that they are pointless.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Some people say "if God meant you to have tattoos he would have given them to you" And I disagree because how does that make sense? Tattoos are an expression of art and you should be able to choose what art you're expressing Nah, God gave me an empty canvass so I decorate as I please

by Hopeful-Emergency-81 1 week ago

I agree. I think almost all of them look bad. I certainly wouldn't pay to get one. It's okay to have different opinions.

by Jacobivinnie 1 week ago

Hope you don't wear any clothing that is dyed

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Respectfully, this is an unpopular opinion every few weeks

by luettgenandres 1 week ago

This is actually really weird. Like the idea that people can like things that you don't has never crossed your mind before? Has anyone ever told you they don't like something that you do?

by Playful_Swordfish904 1 week ago

Then don't get one for yourself. Very simple.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

this opinion is only unpopular because it's ridiculously stupid. not wanting them yourself or thinking they're ugly is one thing. not being able to understand why someone would feel different is like…. sociopathic? what do you call a person without empathy? it's giving that

by patgibson 1 week ago

"This is my canvas I'ma paint it how I want it baby, oh I This is my canvas I'ma paint it, paint it, paint it, how I want it ***** **** you 'cause there, there is no right or wrong, only a song" - J Cole

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Agree they are pointless I got mine because it was a fun idea. I didn't have an end goal I was working towards with it - it was the goal unto itself

by Anonymous 1 week ago

My Tattoos give me a lot of confidence. Also, are you hiding under a rock? There are so so so so many tattoos that are absolutely mind blowing. Especially in recent years.

by cesar35 1 week ago

Ok boomer

by Mountain-Fennel5097 1 week ago

So to you they look terrible that's your point of view to others they look dope and are interesting.

by Dramatic-Doubt1389 1 week ago

It's cool if you don't want tattoos. I love my tattoos. Most of them are memorials. One is a matching tattoo with my mom. A couple were just for fun. They're all beautiful or adorable. I don't care what anyone thinks about them. I usually get complements, and some are conversation starters.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Why would you ever do that? Because some people like it. What desire is fulfilled by permanently drawing something on your body? Because some people like it. Hope that helps.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

They look cool. It's art.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

My body is a temple. A good temple is always well decorated.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

For me it's a form of self expression just as much as any other. I get memories, memorial pieces for loved ones who have passed, parts of my identity, art I love, things that represent my passions. They make me happy when I see them. They make me feel more confident in myself, not just because of the quality of work but because of what they symbolize. It may not be your thing, but a lot of things aren't my thing. I don't feel the need to shame people who get piercings, plastic surgery, mole removal, braces for solely cosmetic reasons, none of those are my thing but I get it. Whatever makes you feel good, as long as it's safe.

by Top-Application 1 week ago

Someone will undoubtedly think something you do is pointless too. Way of the world. As long as no one is trying to convince you to get a tattoo, it shouldn't matter, and what other people do shouldn't matter to you either.

by One_Enthusiasm 1 week ago

Because it's MY body and if I want to ink it up guess what I will. I think people without tattoos are boring lifeless humans, but I don't tell them that they suck

by Anonymous 1 week ago

So is life but here we all are.

by Elouisebecker 1 week ago

they sure are pointless

by tamiakeeling 1 week ago

they dont have to have point, they make me happy

by StandardIncrease8453 1 week ago

Aww look, it's troll bait.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

They are horrible and the fact that most people disagree is jarring, they don't make you more attractive and there are infinite ways of beautifying yourself and your surroundings without exposing yourself to those hideous things

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Your opinion

by Careful_Formal_2856 1 week ago

To be fair, everything is pointless. Might as well have some sick ass decorations on my skin

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I have heaps of tattoos; but they are all hidden and most people dont know I have any at all. I enjoy them.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Not a fan either so I won't get any.

by Both-Star 1 week ago

Never had one , 20 y ago i wanted to have one but then everybody started becoming walking comic books so i said naaah. I love to see a good quality tatoo and i like tatooed women, so sexy

by Select_Molasses2979 1 week ago

Because life is short and tattoos aren't as serious as people make them out to be. I can't wait to be old and wrinkly and look down at all my tattoos that remind me of things I loved when I was younger and how much I enjoyed life

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I think tattoos have lost their cool. Everyone has one now. It's a trend like fashion that will be in or out of style. Women with tattoos scare me. They aren't afraid of pain or commitment hahaha I do like the Japanese yakuza sleeves or full body, mauri ones too. Those are amazing! They have a theme and you can see real artistry. I don't like the random piece here and there, ends up looking like a bathroom stall. At the end of the day, it's your body so do what you want.I don't have any tats but if I did I think I'd go with a yakuza sleeve

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Thinking most look "terrible" sounds more like confirmation bias than anything. You notice terrible tattoos more because you already don't like them. And why would I get tattoos? Because I want to. It's really that simple. Why do you like the taste of your favorite food? Why do you like your favorite music? You just do, there isn't some deeper philosophical reason or hidden trauma because you like one ice cream flavor more than another. Some things really aren't that deep. People like things, they get things, it makes them happy. Who cares? Your attitude sucks more than anything.

by cummeratajimmie 1 week ago

at worst trashy and unattractive. my mum says that all the time whenever she sees a woman with tatoos! never men though lol.. still calls herself a feminist

by Consistent-Bug-6483 1 week ago

If this is the case, then music is pointless. TV is pointless. Dancing is pointless. The paint on your walls is pointless. All of the art that's everywhere, that is inescapable, that you inevitably consume and appreciate, whether you know it or not, is pointless.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

some of the most beautiful tatttoos i've seen are from native islanders who do them to display characteristics of their culture the tongan warriors who were covered in them to display their rank and courage etc, idk how it's so hard for people to understand why people like tattoos. it's a message of your self identity that is permanent.

by No-Giraffe-6016 1 week ago

I have the words of a friend tattooed on me who is no longer here. It brings me a lot of peace to see each day.

by Mammoth_Anywhere 1 week ago

I lost my twin sister, then my mother, then my father all in the last 5 years. I have each of their signatures on my arm so I dont forget them. Esp my sister as we were supposed to grow old together and now I'm alone. This was my way to remember people who literally meant everything to me. I wear their signatures proudly in the open as I too once didnt understand having ink on your body permanently. Now, I totally get it.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

As a twin myself, I'm so very sorry for your loss, few people will understand what it's like losing a twin. If you ever need to vent or talk, my DM's are open for you.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Do you think you would forget about them without the tattoo? I don't have an issue with it or anything, its just that reasoning seems odd to me. I lost my mom 20 years ago, but I don't need physical reminders that she existed, my memories haven't gone away

by Latter-Mycologist-80 1 week ago

I like em. Excellent red flag that someone has low impulse control, especially if they're in the form of random doodles rather than working towards a coherent piece

by antonio28 1 week ago

I'm guessing you're talking about the tattoos you see today but humanity has been tattooing itself for thousands of years and there are many cultural reasons for why.

by Background-Road-9497 1 week ago

They're sometimes just bumper stickers for the shallow crowd. For many, however, it is a permanent reminder of pain, joy, and love as an artistic expression of their lives to remember for all time.

by ObjectiveAerie 1 week ago

Because now when I feel sad, I can look down at my arm and see two cats in space and it makes me smile every time.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

When I get old I'm going to harvest them and put them in a scrapbook.

by Sensitive-Fish 1 week ago

I find that I like my body more when I put art that I like on it - bodies/normal skin is boring and I like the ability to change something permanently about myself that no one can have a say in.

by ShareImpressive 1 week ago

I'm a tattooist. It's cuz I like tattoos, and it's my craft. The same way people are into cars, games, fashion, numbers, hair, and so on. It's a culture, and the cultures and styles vary globally, it has unique and various histories globally…just like any art form, really. There's a well known sign that used to be in traditional tattoo shops - "if you don't belong, don't be long." It's not for everybody, and that's good.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Is it really that perplexing? With this logic, why do literally anything?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's feels good getting a tattoo. It's also a fun way to document memories.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Boohoo

by Willmsjovanny 1 week ago

If you've only ever seen bad ones on people other than tattoo artists that says more about the people you are friends with rather than the tattoos themselves.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Why would I do that? I like tattoos. That's why.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I know 2 people that constantly whine about having no money but get tattoos every time they have some money. Doesn't comprehend for me.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's ok to not like how they look, but I do. This isn't as much of an unpopular opinion as it is an obtuse one. This is more of just not understanding how other people enjoy something you don't. If you've seen "very few artistic tattoos" you either haven't seen many tattoos, or your opinion of the definition of art is off base. I started out only getting tattoos that were significant to me personally: a tattoo to represent my grandmothers memory and love, my grandfathers signature, a matching tattoo with my best friend…. Fast forward almost 7 years and I just think they look cool so I want more. I have the same tattoo as fry from Futurama (no time code unfortunately lol)

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Considering more people don't have tattoos than do, I don't think this opinion is that unpopular, especially in non western countries

by Latter-Mycologist-80 1 week ago

Somehow I misread the title as tacos and was about to get into it w OP lol. But as someone with tats (who also loves tacos) I just like them.

by Bubbly_Willow 1 week ago

See I'm the opposite, I absolutely love tattoos and couldn't see why people wouldn't get them. I get people reasonings but tattoos to me are awesome. I guess it's just preference.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm about 3/4 covered in tattoos, and I still think they're a waste of time and money. Haven't had any work done in over a decade, and I don't care to finish what I started.

by marielleauer 1 week ago

People don't generally get tattoos for other people to look at tbh

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I wanted something that I can't lose. And then discovered that the ritual of paying someone to inflict pain is actually quite an interesting experience, and rather than being guilt-inducing seedy sexual stuff, it's a creative, artistic process that leaves you with an aesthetic memento.

by Public_Flan 1 week ago

Whatever you say blank skin

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I agree with OP but couldn't care less what someone else does with their body. I just hate when the doodle tattoo billboards get mad at me for not having any. When I tell them there's nothing I want on me forever they're like "it's not that serious just get something ". Lol no?
